Congress: We'll Save You

SEARCH BLOG: GASOLINE

Politics is truly the art of the impossible. You can have your cake and eat it, too. You can have a market demanding small cars and have cheap gasoline, too. So sayeth Congress.

It is interesting to note that, in response to certain congressional members' inspiration, executives from automobile manufacturers are not especially keen about the idea of reducing or eliminating federal gasoline taxes. After all, Congress has mandated that automobile manufacturers produce extremely fuel-efficient vehicles [read between the lines: very small cars], so just why would manufacturers want Congress to take an action that would make it more difficult to sell those vehicles?
Higher gasoline prices are already shifting the automobile market to smaller vehicles... without mandates or meddling from Congress. Congress, however, simply can't stand to be irrelevant. It must do something... even if that means screwing things up.
Congress, please don't bother to save us.
