While Al Gore continues to belch out streams of CO2 and heated air, Mother Nature refuses to be bossed by a politician. In fact, she seems to have become inordinately contrary this winter... to the point of denying Mr. Gore the satisfaction of seeing his dire predictions of Arctic and Antarctic meltdowns occurring while flattening the earth with snowstorm after snowstorm across the northern hemisphere.
In our little part of the flattened earth, we have cooled to the idea that global warming is going to save us from the downward trend in temperatures that has been evident since the beginning of this century. Our winter is officially over, but it may be another couple of weeks before we can declare that snow no longer looms overhead.
At this point, southeastern Michigan has experienced its 4th or 2nd snowiest winter in more than a century [depending on where you take your measurements].
That wouldn't be so bad except the snow has stayed around because the temperatures were well below average [but near normal according to NOAA].The following charts show the temperature variations from "normal" for February and March in our area. I realize that we can often fool ourselves into believing something is true if we repeat it enough, but our actual "mean" daily temperatures just seem somewhat less than "near normal" to most of us... despite a brief warm-up yesterday that is going away today... with March even more below the historical average than February.
Keep telling us we are warm, NOAA, and maybe we'll believe it after enough repeating.Perhaps it's all just an April Fool joke perpetrated by Al.
But we'll forgive him if he shows up next February in Michigan and shares some of his hot air with us...
We'll even take him on a short trip to Hell to show him how it does freeze over.
