Our nephew, along with about 1,000 of his fellow engineering students, celebrated his graduation at the University of Michigan yesterday. The speaker was Keith Cooley, CEO of NextEnergy who gave a marvelous speech around four words: gunpowder, hyperspace, Lydia, and cheese. Well, you had to be there.
These young people represent the brightest prospects for our future. As I was waiting for the ceremony to begin, I read through the part of the program that listed the Ph.D. recipients and the titles of their dissertations. Some were exotic and esoteric while others had some very straightforward implications.
As the students crossed the stage to be greeted by the faculty, it was obvious that this was not a chore for either group. They met at center stage with hand shakes, fist taps, chest bumps... yes, I'm not kidding..., hugs... lots of hugs, and even a do-si-do. This was a very happy time for everyone.
Congratulations, class of 2009!
