Computers Are Your Friends

SEARCH BLOG: TECHNOLOGY

Posting had to take a back seat to getting my laptop running properly again. I had this annoying little Interactive Services popup that hit the screen every few minutes, so I researched it and decided that my computer needed a tune-up... I'm not much inclined to do a full re-install, even with all of my files backed up on an external hard drive.

I bought this suite of software from Pareto Logic which fixed about a thousands errors in the registry and identified all of the outdated drivers as well as providing the replacing ones. After a few fits and starts, I seemed to get the hang of it and now the popup problem seems to have been solved. Still, all is not perfect. My paranoid settings for my McAfee virus protection seems to cause a few problems with automatic updates to Vista, so I do that manually every so often. I have Window Defender and McAfee and Malwarebytes and will probably activate a few more things from the Pareto Logic suite. I tend to be cautious about computer security, even though there is no perfect security.

It's not all about Windows either. My iPhone needed to be restored to its original whatever when it froze up the other day. That was a four-hour exercise. And I lost all of the music that was loaded, so I have to go back to iTunes and reload my iPhone from there. But, of course, there was a new version of iTunes and Quick Time and Safari that demanded to be downloaded, so add another hour to the mix. Now all I have to do is restart my computer for about the 5th time and hope I can get my music back and not have anymore popup boxes.

The only thing bugging me now is that "Windows has blocked some startup programs" message that keeps fading in and out. My old 286 never seemed to be so finnicky except for the CPU chips that kept popping loose from the heat build up.

I keep telling myself that computers are my friends.
