Yesterday, my youngest son spent a good part of the day installing Windows 7 and reinstalling the software I had on my Vista load.
Most of the time was simply letting the computer work. He got rid of a little 10gb partition that was pretty much useless and that also wiped the drive clean. Then he loaded Windows 7 which went surprisingly fast. Of course, he has been through it several times already so I didn't even bother to ask what he was doing because he was usually on to the next step before I had formulated my question.
With the software loaded and my browsers [I use three] and bookmarks restored, I am simply copying over my files from an external drive and making sure they are well organized.
Windows 7 did a great job recognizing the jumble of devices that I have including an old HP Officejet G85xi that was a pain to get working in Vista. Windows 7 looked for a driver, found it, and installed it. Same with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard I use because I don't like using the laptop keyboard and mousepad. The dialog boxes/wizards were really easy to understand... yeah, even a caveman could do it.
The system is maybe a little faster now. I think the real test will be when it runs the virus scan. I had been using McAfee and it always did a fine job... but my computer worked as if the hard drive was slogging through molasses whenever the virus scan was running. I haven't had the chance to see what it will be like using the built-in Microsoft security software... yes, a built-in option that Microsoft provides for no additional cost. My son tells me it found some nasty stuff on his computer in some website coding he had and eliminated it... a problem that the other virus detection did not find.
I hope to be back to other subjects soon. Meanwhile, I have to spend a little time exploring the new Windows 7 features. And, of course, get my iTunes working with my iPhone... but that's Apple stuff, not Windows 7.
