It's always a pleasure to visit California when Michigan is in the middle of winter. Mild [coolish] weather invites us to walk around and enjoy the scenery and get some exercise on the hills around San Francisco. There are plenty of sights to see and activities to do.
The one thing I absolutely dislike about this area is the total incompetence in managing traffic signal progression. It's a continuous progression of go-stop-go-stop... ad naseum. That's really ironic for a state that prides itself in being on the "cutting edge" of air quality control. That's the same state that mandates really strict emissions standards for automobiles. Apparently, the state/municipal governments find it much easier to push the blame on automobile manufacturers than do their job to create effective and smooth flowing traffic patterns.
This has been my pet peeve as a driver for many years... not only in California, but universally around the U.S. What's so difficult to calculate the timing of lights on a main thoroughfare with traffic going X distance at Y posted speed? Perhaps California's educational system lacks sufficient mathematics training. Senator Boxer and Rep. Pelosi should look into this immediately rather than coming up with expensive, economy killing mandates.
The high volume of traffic on this roadway suggests an insufficient distribution of green time.
