Detroit Will Not Downsize Area Until Everyone Is Gone

This is a clarification of an earlier statement:
Smaller must mean something other than geography.  Let's see:
  • population
  • services
  • resources
As individuals, we recognize the need to adapt to changes in our personal situations.  My wife and I realized that maintaining two homes was untenable in retirement....  There were two properties to maintain, two property taxes to pay, two sets of utility bills facing us, and one retirement pot that would tend to shrink in real terms over time.

Somehow, Detroit labors under the illusion that it is immune from reality.  As people and businesses leave, Detroit evidently will simply clear the properties left behind.  Eventually, it is hoped that some useful purpose will be found for this abandoned land.  Meanwhile, the city increasingly resembles Swiss cheese.  As a result of this illusion, the city will remain mired in economic malaise and continue to drain money from a state that can ill afford that.

It is time for Mr. Bing to remember what he learned as a businessman and forget what he recently picked up from his predecessors in the mayor's office.

What can Detroit learn from a corporate neighbor?
