Julián Castro gave a pretty good speech at the Democratic National Convention last night. He is young and personable. He talked about his grandmother and mother and their struggles to provide opportunities for him and his brother. He talked about how wonderful it was that America made it possible to go from poor to powerful in one generation. He talked about hard work and personal sacrifice as the keys to personal success.
Then he talked about how others would not have the same opportunities if Republicans, specifically Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, became President and Vice President of the United States. Only by re-electing Barack Obama would these opportunities continue to exist. Only by re-electing Barack Obama would there be a middle class. Only by re-electing Barack Obama would education be saved and the path to success be retained.
He did not speak about the falling incomes of Americans during Barack Obama's administration. He did not speak of the massive indebtedness added to the taxpayers of America during Barack Obama's administration. He did not speak about the unemployment and discouraged worker malaise during Barack Obama's administration. He did not speak of the extremely high unemployment or underemployment of the college graduates during Barack Obama's administration. He did not speak of the large cuts to vocational education during Barack Obama's administration.
Yes, he gave a fine, feel-good speech.
He did not speak about how the economic policies during Barack Obama's administration had undermined the economic recovery and left students burdened with debt.
