One might speculate that there was no real mention of Detroit because the governor had no real inkling of what to do about Detroit. But given his detailed analysis of nearly everything else, including the impact of turning the rapids on the Grand River into recreational rapids in Grand Rapids [got that?], it's hard to imagine he doesn't have several three-inch binders with specific plans for Detroit.
Detroit should be the bedrock for Michigan's economy, but it's an anchor holding back the state. Money goes in and little comes out. Detroit just sits and deteriorates. Not having a plan is inexcusable. Not sharing that plan is questionable, but maybe it is just too politically explosive to touch on television. Or maybe it is just too depressing given the upbeat quality the governor was trying to achieve.
Michigan is improving on many fronts from its recent nadir, but Detroit is not one of those fronts. Yet Detroit will either be the governor's greatest success or greatest failure depending on what happens during this year. Not talking about it doesn't make the problem go away.
