GOP Dogfights Yield No Clear Winner

SEARCH BLOG: POLITICS

With the round of victories in three states on February 7, Rick Santorum has turned the GOP race into a real dogfight.

 [source]

I have to say that I have a problem with states that use the caucus approach rather than inviting voters into the equation.  That's the way Obama stole the nomination from Hillary Clinton last year.  They may or may not reflect the real intentions of the voters... and it is the voters who count in November.

But... just as there is no ideal candidate, there is no ideal nomination process.  So, we can sit back and watch the dogs fight it out.

The downside is that the eventual GOP winner might turn out to be a real "dog" in the November election.

Impressions of relative strengths and weaknesses among potential voters for a Republican candidate:

Obama To Learn Canada Has Other Customers For Its Oil

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and OIL

Meanwhile, gas prices are expected to hit $4.00 per gallon in a few months as Middle East oil supplies are uncertain and President Obama focuses on alternative solutions.
The $40,000 Focus Electric will compete head-on with the Nissan Leaf, which arrived in Tucson amid much buzz last spring.
Or you can consider the 36 mpg highway gas versions despite the $4.00 per gallon and pocket $20 grand... or get two.

Middle East Going Nuclear

Iran's peaceful nuclear program, as corroborated in Iran's English Radio website, is raising interest among other Middle Eastern nations.

Citing an another Middle East energy shortage, the Saudi government announced that they are keenly interested in following the lead of Iran, the nation with the first major Middle East energy shortage, in pursuing the nuclear option. [source]

Apparently, nuclear weapons are far more compact and release energy much faster than old-fashioned nuclear power plants.  Such efficiency is highly desirable.

Blackthink

SEARCH BLOG: RACE and EDUCATION

Recently, Newt Gingrich got into the "racist" swamp by taking a swipe at the food stamp program.  Most politicians shy away from using words like food stamps because they are bound to be seen as racists.  Why?  Not because they are referring to programs that cater exclusively to blacks or as a metaphor for racial preference or racial incompetence.  No, they get into the racist swamp because someone else who only thinks about possible racial subtext makes the connection.

What was said [source]:

"I'm prepared, if the NAACP invites me, I'll go to their convention and talk about why the African American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps," Gingrich said.
The former House speaker has made a habit of calling President Obama the "food stamp president" -- a nickname he used on Thursday as well -- and has often painted the contrast between himself and Mr. Obama as a choice between paychecks and food stamps.
"The fact is, if I become your nominee we will make the key test very simple: Food stamps versus paychecks," Gingrich said. "Obama is the best food stamp president in American history. More people are on food stamps today because of Obama's policies than ever in history. I would like to be the best paycheck president in American history."
The use of food stamps in America has continued to climb in recent years, and hit an all-time high of nearly 45 million in 2011.
According to U.S. Census Bureau, about 28 percent of households that receive food stamps are African American, while 59 percent are white.  According to the same report, about 78 percent of American households are white, while about 12 percent are black. (The overall population is 72.4 percent white and 12.6 percent black.)
The issue Gingrich was attempting to address was economic policies that take people off payrolls and make them food stamp recipients.  Unfortunately for Gingrich, statistics split by race show that blacks are twice as often the recipients of food stamps than whites... an example of how Obama's economic policies are failing blacks... a fact which was immediately deflected into the realm of being a racist.

That was pretty daring on the part of Gingrich to use any reference to race, even if it wasn't the central issue.  It's the political equivalent of sitting on a stockpile of decades old dynamite; a very unstable situation.  He strayed into the realm of "Blackthink."

Islamaversion Not Islamophobia

SEARCH BLOG: ISLAM

Over the past decade, the word "Islamophobia" has crept into our lexicon.  Strictly speaking, that means an "irrational fear of Islam or Muslims."  This notion has been picked up by the egalitarian left when describing any negative reaction to actions committed by those who call themselves Muslims and done, supposedly, in the name of Islam.

There is a thought that "you're not paranoid if they are really out to get you."  Another way of saying that is fear is not irrational if someone says they are out to kill you... and acts on it.

Americans have always had a parochial view of the world.  "There is America and those stuffy Europeans and then a bunch of backward nations... well, Australia and New Zealand are okay maybe, but they're off in some remote corner.  The Middle East?  Mainly living in the past with a weird religion and always trying to kill Jews.  We put up with them because they have oil we need, but we'd rather not."

For the most part, Americans only heard about the Middle East when there was an oil price spike or one of the countries surrounding Israel had launched another ineffective military action against it.  We liked the food... shish kebob, pilaf, hummus, baba ganoush... and the few Iranians, or Chaldeans, or Iraqis, or Lebanese that we met all seemed like friendly, likable people... and we consider them welcome friends and acquaintances.

There were the nutball Iranian clerics who attacked the American embassy and held Americans hostage while an ineffectual President Carter got glassy-eyed.   Then American troops were attacked by some crazy Middle Easterners who blew up the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon killing 241.  But as terrible as that was, it was somewhat seen as an attack against the military, not so much an attack on America by many Americans.

The image of Middle East Muslims began to change for most Americans.  They were seen as having some sort of irrational antipathy for Americans.  What had we done to them?  Sure, we supported Israel... a nation carved out of the wilderness that was their homeland thousands of years ago.  Yes, we had supported some Middle Eastern leaders who turned out to be unpopular.  But we didn't invade their countries.  We didn't go out of our way to wage war on them.  Obviously, our world view and their world view was radically different.

Still, we viewed the Middle East as an annoyance.  A bunch of "towelheads" running around babbling excitedly, gesturing insanely, and making as much sense as The Three Stooges.

Then some of those crazies, led by a blind guy who called himself an "imam", actually came to the U.S. and tried to blow up the World Trade Center with a truck full of explosives.  What was their problem?  Who were these people who wanted to "kill the Jews" and called us "Satan?"  Were they members of some cult?

This was getting serious and people started listening to the rantings of these madmen.  Now they were acting out their threats in America.

For the millions of Americans who never met a Muslim or had never even heard of Islam, this was something like monsters from Mars attacking.  What was all of this talk about "infidels?"  Who is this "Mohammed" guy and why are all of these people doing these things in his name?

Then the unthinkable.  September 11, 2001.  The world had officially gone insane.  These "towelheads" were flying airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City... and the Pentagon... and had other targets, too.

They made their point.  They were willing to die for their "cause", whatever that was.  And at that point, Americans almost universally decided that we would accommodate their wishes.

The rest is history and becoming history.

Islamic "nutcakes" now have the full attention of the U.S. and Europe.  Joint "military exercises" have been held in various Middle Eastern countries.  Those who thought it might get rid of the Islamic insanity didn't really understand the depth of the insanity.  It was insanity grounded in a distorted, malevolent religious belief reinforced with cultural barbarity and misogyny that really didn't care what military actions were taken against it or innocent people around them.  They had the "truth."  God, Allah, was on their side.  The ultimate religious fanaticism combine with a political fantasy of the past... the worst mixing of religion and politics possible.

The present U.S. administration has no stomach for all of this.  Its goal is to get out of the Middle East as fast as possible.  There is an economy to fix and an election to fix.  We've bombed the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan and killed some of the perpetrators of the 2001 WTC attack.  Good enough.

Those who continue to see the Middle East as the potential source of the next great world conflict are simply not being realistic, or so says the U.S. Eastern Intelligensia.  Iran?  It doesn't have any nuclear weapons.  It has no plans for nuclear weapons.  Iraq is now a peaceful country and Afghanistan will no longer be our concern.  We can go back to ignoring the Middle East except when Israel is attacked and then our President will call for peace talks.  Those who point out that this might not be a judicious course for America are called Islamophobic... having an irrational fear of Islam and Muslims.

There are two parts to that thought that are incorrect.  Given the past three decades of attacks on Americans and America by those calling themselves Muslims and true believers of Islam, any concerns toward these people are not irrational.  Given the response already given and likely to be given again, the response is not fear.

If a word had to be coined to describe the feelings that most Americans have toward these true believers and their faith and their cultures, it would be Islamaversion.

aversion
Noun:
  1. A strong dislike or disinclination: "an aversion to exercise".
  2. Someone or something that arouses such feelings.
This is not a feeling most Americans want, but it is one that has been reinforced too often.  We still have our friends and neighbors and acquaintances from the Middle East and we consciously separate them in our minds from the groups and forces who have attacked us.  We know them.  But we're not sure if we can ever know or want to know those others.  There will have to be a lot of reconciling for that... and that won't happen as long as we remain "The Great Satan."

Superbowl Outcome Cannot Be Predicted By Changes In CO2

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE CHANGE and FOOTBALL

Hypothesis: a little know fact is that carbon dioxide [CO2] is about three times heavier than air.  This has an effect on football players' passing accuracy.  The greater the rate of increased CO2, the less quarterbacks are able to adjust their passes to the atmospheric density.

The changes in CO2 concentrations when comparing the start of the year to the end of the year measured by NOAA at Mauna Loa show that there is absolutely no correlation between changes in CO2 and the performance of the New England Patriots in the Superbowl.

Year    CO2 Change
2000   1.62
2001   1.58
2002   2.53  New England Won
2003   2.29
2004   1.56  New England Won
2005   2.52  New England Won
2006   1.76
2007   2.20
2008   1.62  New England Lost
2009   1.88
2010   2.42
2011   1.94

This clearly shows that whether the change in concentrations is at the high end or the low end of the range, New England's performance is not related.  The change during 2011 fell closer to the middle of the range than the extremes, which leaves the picture even more cloudy... something that happens when frozen CO2 melts.

Conclusion: clearly, climate change is not nearly the problem that many people perceive it to be.

Regardless, it can be clearly seen above that Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots, is predicting win number four. [image source]

Energy Nyet

SEARCH BLOG: ENERGY

The U.S. has enjoyed a relatively mild winter due to a strong Arctic Oscillation that has prevented cold air from streaming down through Canada.  The downside is we haven't been able to store a lot of extra food outdoors, but we're adapting.

Meanwhile, things are not as comfortable 1/3 way around the world.

From the BBC News:

Freezing Europe hit by Russian gas shortage

Even Rome has seen a rare fall of snow, closing schools and the Colosseum
Freezing weather sweeping across Europe has led to a shortage of vital Russian gas supplies to several countries, officials say.
An EU energy spokeswoman said eight countries had seen a reduction in gas due to increased demand in Russia.
She said the situation was not an emergency but was being monitored.
The cold snap is being blamed for scores of deaths in eastern Europe where temperatures have plunged to below -35C.
Just a few questions for President Obama.

  • What happens when the Arctic Oscillation becomes weak again and massive cold air streams into the U.S. between December and March... and your energy policies of interference and obstruction lead to shortages... especially if our friends in Iran and Venezuela decide to throw a monkey wrench into the world's energy supplies and prices skyrocket?
  • Will there be another bailout provide enough money to everyone to pay for their energy needs?
  • Would it not be better to get out of the way and ensure North American supplies are readily available... both natural gas and oil?
  • Or will you bring back Rahm Emanuel to make sure another crisis doesn't go to waste... one that you helped to create?
  • Or should we just hope that one of those multi-million dollar loans and grants to alternative energy companies leads to an energy miracle rather than a crony bankruptcy.
  • Or are you lost in the windmills of your mind? [image source]

Obama's Popularity Two Years Later

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA

Well, this was an easy call....

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 03, 2010President Obama's PopularitySEARCH BLOG: OBAMA
President Obama's popularity rating has improved dramatically since the State Of The Union speech when he dramatically shifted focus from the climate red herring and the health care red herring to the one major concern for most Americans: the economy.
It didn't take a rocket scientist to understand what the American people want to hear from their President. So, better late than never, President Obama told them what they wanted to hear... and his approval rating jumped from minus 19 to minus 6... probably on the hope of change rather than any real change in direction.
I suspect it is the absence of talk about health care, climate, and alternative energy that has given people the illusion of change in the President's agenda. What hasn't changed are:
  • a focus on spending, taxes, and more regulation rather than working with business to improve the environment for jobs creation
  • a focus on restricting the growth of existing energy sources in the hope that unreliable alternative sources will sustain the needs of businesses and consumers without added crippling costs
  • a focus on government growth in the belief that bureaucracy brings out the best in our nation
The fundamentals will be the eventual undoing of the President's agenda... and his popularity.
And so that chart now looks like this.

The latest U.S. export... our cold winter:

.02.2012 | Source:

Pravda.Ru

Winter temperatures in Russia have gone extreme. The air in some regions of the republic of Yakutia (Siberia) has cooled down to -50 degrees Centigrade. Anomalous cold of -40 degrees is expected in the Perm region of Russia, Vesti.Ru reports.
In the European part of Russia, the current temperatures are ten degrees below the norm. On Wednesday morning, the temperature in the Moscow region dropped to 26 and even 30 degrees below zero Centigrade.
Cold weather is expected to become even colder this week in Moscow and the region, RIA Novosti reports. Winter cold has already claimed several human lives. One person died of frostbite yesterday in Moscow. Ten others asked for medical help and were hospitalized.
Ukraine suffers from extreme cold as well. According to Ukrainian news agencies, the cold has killed 30 people during the last three days. More than 600 people asked for medical help, 544 of them were hospitalized.
Russia's Chief Sanitary Doctor Gennady Onishchenko believes that there is a positive side to such severe winter cold. Low temperatures prevent the epidemic of flu, the official said.
Apparently, the flu virus freezes to death.

Sometimes you lose; sometimes you win.

Florida GOP Primary Results Versus Predictions

SEARCH BLOG: POLITICS

Now that the Florida GOP primary results are in and, no surprise, Mitt Romney was the winner, let's look at prognostications versus performance.

Actual results via Google search:

Now here are the predictions as shown here yesterday:

Public Policy Poll claiming Highly Accurate Polling Across The Country:

Dead on for Gingrich, but significantly missed for Romney

NBC Marist Poll claiming Romney up 15 over Gingrich in Florida:

Dead on for the spread, but off by 4-5 percentage points

Rasmussen Poll claiming Romney 44%, Gingrich 28%:

Dead on for the spread; almost dead on for the percentages

If results matter in polls, the Rasmussen poll was considerably better than the others.  It may be due to their methodology that surveys likely voters rather than man-on-the-street.

Opinions are nice; voting is better.

February 3, 2006
Go back to 1999-2000 and see what the Fed did. They are following the same pattern for 2005-06. If it ain't broke, the Fed will fix it... and good!
August 29, 2006 The Federal Reserve always acts on old information... and is the only cause of U.S. recessions.
December 5, 2006 Last spring I wrote about what I saw to be a sharp downturn in the economy in the "rustbelt" states, particularly Michigan.
March 28, 2007
The Federal Reserve sees no need to cut interest rates in the light of adverse recent economic data, Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.
The Fed chairman said ”to date, the incoming data have supported the view that the current stance of policy is likely to foster sustainable economic growth and a gradual ebbing in core inflation”.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.
August 11, 2007 I suspect that within 6 months the Federal Reserve will be forced to lower interest rates before housing becomes a black hole.
September 11, 2007 It only means that the overall process has flaws guaranteeing it will be slow in responding to changes in the economy... and tend to over-react as a result.
September 18, 2007 I think a 4% rate is really what is needed to turn the economy back on the right course. The rate may not get there, but more cuts will be needed with employment rates down and foreclosure rates up.
October 25, 2007 How long will it be before I will be able to write: "The Federal Reserve lowered its lending rate to 4% in response to the collapse of the U.S. housing market and massive numbers of foreclosures that threaten the banking and mortgage sectors."
November 28, 2007 FED VICE CHAIRMAN DONALD KOHN
"Should the elevated turbulence persist, it would increase the possibility of further tightening in financial conditions for households and businesses," he said.

"Uncertainties about the economic outlook are unusually high right now," he said. "These uncertainties require flexible and pragmatic policymaking -- nimble is the adjective I used a few weeks ago."
http://www.reuters.com/

December 11, 2007 Somehow the Fed misses the obvious.
fed_rate_moves_425_small.gif

December 13, 2007 [from The Christian Science Monitor]
"The odds of a recession are now above 50 percent," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "We are right on the edge of a recession in part because of the Fed's reluctance to reduce interest rates more aggressively." [see my comments of September 11]
January 7, 2008 The real problem now is that consumers can't rescue the economy and manufacturing, which is already weakening, will continue to weaken. We've gutted the forces that could avoid a downturn. The question is not whether there will be a recession, but can it be dampened sufficiently so that it is very short.
January 11, 2008 This is death by a thousand cuts.
January 13, 2008 [N.Y. Times]
“The question is not whether we will have a recession, but how deep and prolonged it will be,” said David Rosenberg, the chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch. “Even if the Fed’s moves are going to work, it will not show up until the later part of 2008 or 2009.”
January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
