Cold Weather Consistent With Global Warming

SEARCH BLOG: WEATHER.

Actually, cold weather is consistent with winter.  This odd map of pressure systems is unlike most I've seen before.  Must be consistent with something that will require government action and new taxes.

That results in this.

Yup, that's consistent with winter.

Russia Threatened By Global Warming Sea Level Rises

SEARCH BLOG: GLOBAL WARMING.

Pictures of Russian cities covered in water have been flooding the internet recently.  These inundations are "consistent with" global warming.

The water levels have reached "tsunami" proportions according to Russian media.  Fortunately, seasonal colder temperatures have prevented most structures from being washed away by the water.

Satellite image shows the extent of water covering Russia and nearby countries.

Russians are hoping that efforts to curb global warming by eliminating the burning of all fossil fuels during the next few months will reverse these global warming inundations by June or July.

Meanwhile in Australia, water levels have dropped in many areas which is "consistent with" global warming.

Of course, all this pales in comparison with the rise in Africa's fatal diseases which are "consistent with" global warming.

Even Mother Nature has adverse reactions in the form of earthquakes and volcanoes "consistent with" global warming.

The British media reports that NASA and Penn State University scientists say that alien invasions may be "consistent with" global warming.

Well, I'm going to put on my shorts and sunglasses because, despite what my own non-scientific senses may tell me, it's a good day for golf... "consistent with global warming."

Obama To Fight Climate Change

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and CLIMATE CHANGE.

Despite growing evidence that the climate changes regardless of mankind's influence, President Obama may embark on a bold new effort to control the climate through taxes.  The first step will be to gather enough politicians in one place that reasoned thought is impossible.  This may happen soon.

From the Guardian:

Barack Obama may intervene directly on climate change by hosting a summit at the White House early in his second term, environmental groups say.
They say the White House has given encouraging signals to a proposal for Obama to use the broad-based and bipartisan summit to launch a national climate action strategy.
"What we talked about with the White House is using it as catalyst not just for the development of a national strategy but for mobilising people all over the country at every level," said Bob Doppelt, executive director of the Resource Innovation Group, the Oregon-based thinktank that has been pushing for the high-level meeting. He said it would not be a one-off event.
After all, 2012 was the hottest year ever.  Well, maybe not.
2012 Didn't Crack The Top Ten For Record Maximums: 'NOAA has inflated 2012 record maximum number by adding new stations which didn't exist during the hot years of 1930s'' -- 'That is a completely illegitimate approach. An apples to apples comparison uses only the same stations. When that is done, 2012 doesn't even crack the ten hottest years'
Feds caught altering past temperature data: NOAA claims 1998 was previous 'hottest on record' on record -- But in 1999, the same year was only the 5th warmest before 'adjustments' -- 'In an article which NASA published in 1999, Hansen showed that 1998 was only the fifth warmest year, after 1934, 1921, 1931 and 1953. In fact, 1998 was 0.6C cooler than 1934' -- 'Over the past decade, NASA and NOAA have continuously altered the temperature record to cool the past and warm the present. Their claims are straight out Orwell's 1984, and have nothing to do with science'

New Government Conspiracy: Climate Change

SEARCH BLOG: GLOBAL WARMING.

For those of you who still believe there is honor among thieves, you'll be pleased with the government's latest attempt to find a crisis that requires a tax.  If a corporation keeps two sets of books with the intent to mislead the public for financial gain, that would be fraud.  If the government does the same thing, that would be protecting us from global warming; aka climate change.

Anthony Watts examined the weather data published by the government and found... 2 sets of books!  One for claiming that the U.S. was experiencing record warmth... that's to support EPA mandates and potentially a carbon tax... and the other record... the real record that shows no such records.

If you have any interest in the lengths to which global warming believers will go to "prove" their position, you ought to read this:

Does NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) keep two separate sets of climate books for the USA?

Every Weather Event Is Not Climate Change

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE CHANGE.

After 16 years of no global warming, some carbon tax activists are scrambling for a new story line to raise taxes on everyone.  After all, if the global climate simply won't cooperate with the "scientific consensus" that CO2 is causing runaway global warming, then they will have to seek new "proof" that they were right and the data is wrong.

July in the U.S. was particularly warm.  The carbon tax activists were in full swing.

Heatwaves blamed on global warming.
Yes, July was warmer than usual.

But then, the next three months sort of reversed that picture.

Not much was reported about that.

Then came hurricane Sandy.

It's Global Warming, Stupid.

So, let's get this straight.  An unusual [but not unprecedented] singular weather event is evidence of global warming...

but 16 years of no warming is not evidence of anything.

[source.]

There is bound to be another unusual, singular event that can be touted as evidence of a phenomenon not supported by data.  The uninformed and those with very short memories will be convinced... and more than willing to give the carbon tax activists what they seek... your money.
Washington Post endorses carbon tax 'to fight global warming', Predicts it 'could bring in serious money' -- 'would raise $125 billion a year' - 'A carbon tax would make sense regardless of revenue it would raise. But the policy could bring in serious money...Carbon taxes hit lower-income househol...
Here in Michigan, the trees dropped their leaves a couple weeks earlier than usual this fall.  Is that a sign of global warming, global cooling, climate change... or just natural variability in weather?

Half Of Recorded Warming In U.S. Did Not Happen

SEARCH BLOG: GLOBAL WARMING

Well, it did, but it didn't.  The recorded temperatures were higher; the weather did not cause the higher temperatures.

If you have ever walked from a park on a sunny day to an asphalt-covered parking lot, you will understand the phenomenon of an "urban heat island."  Now imagine what happens if you move an "official" weather station where "official" temperatures are recorded from that park to the middle of the parking lot.

Go ahead, imagine.

Now read this:

New study shows half of the global warming in the USA is artificial

Harvard Polluters Plan to Block the Sun Using Man-Made Clouds

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE

From Gizmodo:

The planet is hot and getting hotter. But while most plans to use geoengineering to alter the weather have been rather hypothetical, now a pair of Harvard engineers have announced that they intend to spray thousands of tons of particles into the sky to block the sun's rays—within the coming year.
The pair plan to launch a balloon to ascend 80,000 feet over Fort Sumner, New Mexico, before pumping out tens or hundreds of kilograms of sulphate aerosols into the sky. The idea is that the particles will reflect sunlight back into space, helping decrease the temperature of the Earth. [more]
What does the EPA think about this?  Intentionally polluting our atmosphere in the name of science?  Well, if it protects us from CO2, it must be okay. [image]

... but what if they are wrong?

Oregon State University Fires Scientist For Being An Unbeliever

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE and RELIGION

Science is the relentless search for truth that changes with further knowledge.  Religion is the relentless defense of an unchanging truth without the application of further knowledge.  Scientific "truths" are always open to challenge and debate; religious "truths" are never open to challenge and debate.

Nearly 500-years ago, the Catholic Church moved out of the realm of religion and into the realm of science when it forced scientist Galileo Galilei to publicly recant his position that the earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around and spend the rest of his life in house arrest.  Centuries later, the church apologized for this slight error. [image]

One can only wonder how long it will be before Oregon State University issues a similar apology... if ever... to Nickolas Drapela, PhD.  After all, they changed their minds about a logo.  Perhaps they can take on a real challenge to their thinking. [images]

Dr. Drapela is a well-respected scientist and well-liked teacher who happened to run afoul of the OSU dogma related to climate.  Apparently, the science is "settled" at OSU.  That means there is no room for debate using data, physics, or any other scientific means of challenge.

Some would say that Dr. Drapela was attempting to do the same thing as teaching "intelligent design," but in reality he was not using belief in any form... unlike OSU which was using belief in climate models that have been shown to be severely faulty and based on very questionable manipulation of weather data.  But religious dogma, in any form, cannot tolerate ideas that deviate from the "truth" of the dogma.  Hence, Dr. Drapela's presence was no longer welcome at the Shrine of the Warming Climate.

Climate Extremes Not Getting More Extreme

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE

Records and Extremes

Thanks for this update, Joe D'Aleo.

In order to understand better the significance of these charts, I recommend that you read the whole post from 2-years ago at Climate Science.  Here is an excerpt:

1. The data are not adjusted. They are recognized as valid by NOAA and have not been “corrected” by interpolation with data from other weather station data.
2. They represent the climate “boundaries” for statewide geographies. A record either stands on it’s own or is replaced by a subsequent reading that ties or exceeds it.
3. It allows testing of the tenet that global warming necessarily results it an increased frequency of temperature extremes.
Anthony Watts has identified other types of "corrected" data that are avoided in the above data.

Climate Skeptic - Somewhat

SEARCH BLOG: GLOBAL WARMING

From Climate Depot:

Alert: 'Gaia' scientist James Lovelock reverses himself: I was 'alarmist' about climate change & so was Gore! 'The problem is we don't know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago'

“The climate is doing its usual tricks. There's nothing much really happening yet. We were supposed to be halfway toward a frying world now,” he said. “The world has not warmed up very much since the millennium. Twelve years is a reasonable time... it (the temperature) has stayed almost constant, whereas it should have been rising -- carbon dioxide is rising, no question about that,” he added...Asked if he was now a climate skeptic, Lovelock told msnbc.com: “It depends what you mean by a skeptic. I'm not a denier.”
Nothing is ever as simple as it first seems, but if he not a believer and not a denier, he must be confused.

We have tried to explain why there might be confusion, but the message is not what people want to hear.

NASA's Dr. James Hansen - If The Data Does Not Fit The Theory, Change The Data

SEARCH BLOG: GLOBAL WARMING

Via Climate Depot:

Spectacularly Poor Climate Science At NASA  Dr. James Hansen of NASA, has been the world’s leading promoter of the idea that the world is headed towards “climate disaster.” There is little evidence to back this up. [Please read full article here]
The key point is that in order to use science to back up your theory, the data should support your theory.  However, in the case of NASA and Dr. James Hansen, the data has been adjusted to fit the theory.  Below are extracts from the full article.
The animated image below shows the changes which Dr. Hansen made to the historical US temperature record after the year 1999. He cooled the 1930s, and warmed the 1980s and 1990s. The year 1998 went from being more than half a degree cooler than 1934, to warmer than 1934.
Spectacularly Poor Climate Science At NASA
But the effort wasn't limited to the U.S. record:
He has done the same thing all over the planet. Below is one recent example in Iceland, where he dramatically cooled the first half of the century, and warmed the present. He appears to be trying to erase evidence that there was a very warm period in much of the Arctic around 1940.
If this were just a case of scientific dishonesty, we could all just yawn and go on our way with the thought that the perpetrators would go down in history as buffoons and nothing else would come of this.  We would be sadly mistaken.  This is the federal government we are talking about. This is tax money we are talking about.  What has science to do with it?
... and some of that has leaked across the border.

So, if this isn't science, then we are left with faith-based legislation.  It may not be your traditional definition of religion, but it fits.

Global Warming Now Ending - Global Cooling Next?

SEARCH BLOG: CLIMATE

“There were views that anthropogenic interference, like emissions of greenhouse gases by all heat electric power stations and all industrial influence in general, has resulted in irreversible changes in the Earth’s climate. Those views were based on excessively rapid warming in the 20th century which was thought to continue indefinitely. However, the events of the last three years, when Venetian canals froze and Spanish vineyards were destroyed by frost, and the fact that now Moscow and a considerable part of Europe are having a particularly long winter, prove that temporary cooling has begun. The same is happening to the Antarctic ice. The smallest ice volume and area in the Antarctic were observed in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and early 2012, the volume of ice grew.”
Thus, the academician says, the theory of continuous warming is not getting practical proof. In this century, the volume of the Arctic ice will grow and contract by turns. On the other hand, no one can say when the planet is to expect a new Glacier Period, similar to the one contemporary Europe saw 20,000 years ago, Nikolay Dobretsov continues.
Well, of course they would think so.  While we in the U.S. were enjoying a mild, low-cost heating winter, the Russians and a very large part of Europe and Asia were suffering through yet another miserably cold winter.

Still, the idea that "temporary cooling" has begun makes about as much sense as "global warming has paused temporarily."  Either the earth is cooling or it is not; either the earth is warming or it is not.  If one follows the other, then you are seeing normal variability in climate.

Earth's climate continues to confound scientists. Following a 30-year trend of warming, global temperatures have flatlined since 2001 despite rising greenhouse gas concentrations, and a heat surplus that should have cranked up the planetary thermostat. [source]
In a desperate attempt to explain why, the Global Warming Press has pointed fingers at George W. Bush... no, that is it has pointed fingers at China.
Sulfur particles in the air deflect the sun's rays and can temporarily cool things down a bit. That can happen even as coal-burning produces the carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming.
It's always convenient to have someone to blame when those inconvenient facts get in the way of your theory.  No matter what happens, the theory is always right and reality has an explanation.  The theory itself cannot be falsified.
In its basic form, falsifiability is the belief that for any hypothesis to have credence, it must be inherently disprovable before it can become accepted as a scientific hypothesis or theory.
For example, if a scientist asks, “Does God exist?” then this can never be science because it is a theory that cannot be disproved.
The idea is that no theory is completely correct, but if not falsified, it can be accepted as truth. [source]
That is why you will hear so many warming alarmists use the phrase "consistent with" global warming despite addressing opposite or conflicting real occurrences.  "Consistent with" higher temperatures, lower temperatures, more snow, less snow, drought, floods, more hurricanes, less hurricanes.

Why?  Because it is a belief, not a falsifiable scientific theory.

Almost Spring Day

SEARCH BLOG: WEATHER

You'll have to forgive my forgetfulness about posting earlier today.  We've just returned from a long trip to California where the last week was nothing but cool, rainy, foggy weather with a series of missed flight connections and finally arrived home Sunday morning at 3:00 AM.  Our internal clocks are finally resetting.

Then there is the local weather.  It's hard to be inside when it like that outside... especially because it is technically still winter!  In Michigan!  Hard to believe that the weather here is so much better than the middle of California.  And, it is supposed to be even warmer the next couple of days.

This winter has been extraordinary.  The lake barely froze over when it thawed.  Not much in the way of ice fishing, parasail snowboarding, snowmobiling or any other activities on the lake this winter.  I even wore my summer hiking shoes all winter.

The flip side of the loss of winter activities was the much lower heating bills and the ease of getting around.  This winter was very kind on our bank account.

So, is this what global warming feels like?  We can only wish.  But the real answer seems to be an arctic weather pattern that has kept cold air to our north and dumped it into Europe and Asia where they have been generally miserable.  We don't expect a repeat next winter.

February 3, 2006
Go back to 1999-2000 and see what the Fed did. They are following the same pattern for 2005-06. If it ain't broke, the Fed will fix it... and good!
August 29, 2006 The Federal Reserve always acts on old information... and is the only cause of U.S. recessions.
December 5, 2006 Last spring I wrote about what I saw to be a sharp downturn in the economy in the "rustbelt" states, particularly Michigan.
March 28, 2007
The Federal Reserve sees no need to cut interest rates in the light of adverse recent economic data, Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.
The Fed chairman said ”to date, the incoming data have supported the view that the current stance of policy is likely to foster sustainable economic growth and a gradual ebbing in core inflation”.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.
August 11, 2007 I suspect that within 6 months the Federal Reserve will be forced to lower interest rates before housing becomes a black hole.
September 11, 2007 It only means that the overall process has flaws guaranteeing it will be slow in responding to changes in the economy... and tend to over-react as a result.
September 18, 2007 I think a 4% rate is really what is needed to turn the economy back on the right course. The rate may not get there, but more cuts will be needed with employment rates down and foreclosure rates up.
October 25, 2007 How long will it be before I will be able to write: "The Federal Reserve lowered its lending rate to 4% in response to the collapse of the U.S. housing market and massive numbers of foreclosures that threaten the banking and mortgage sectors."
November 28, 2007 FED VICE CHAIRMAN DONALD KOHN
"Should the elevated turbulence persist, it would increase the possibility of further tightening in financial conditions for households and businesses," he said.

"Uncertainties about the economic outlook are unusually high right now," he said. "These uncertainties require flexible and pragmatic policymaking -- nimble is the adjective I used a few weeks ago."

December 11, 2007 Somehow the Fed misses the obvious.

December 13, 2007 [from The Christian Science Monitor]
"The odds of a recession are now above 50 percent," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "We are right on the edge of a recession in part because of the Fed's reluctance to reduce interest rates more aggressively." [see my comments of September 11]
January 7, 2008 The real problem now is that consumers can't rescue the economy and manufacturing, which is already weakening, will continue to weaken. We've gutted the forces that could avoid a downturn. The question is not whether there will be a recession, but can it be dampened sufficiently so that it is very short.
January 11, 2008 This is death by a thousand cuts.
January 13, 2008 [N.Y. Times]
“The question is not whether we will have a recession, but how deep and prolonged it will be,” said David Rosenberg, the chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch. “Even if the Fed’s moves are going to work, it will not show up until the later part of 2008 or 2009.”
January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
