Ignoring Immigration Laws And Calling It Reform

SEARCH BLOG: IMMIGRATION.

The people of the United States have had a principle that the rule of law rather than the whims of leaders was necessary and required to have this republic function properly.  As with any principle, this one can be and has been subverted many times for many "good reasons."  This subversion has occurred millions of times in ways small and subtle to presidential "recess appointments."  Even the courts of the land will jump and twist through legal "double think" to fit judgments to political expediency.

Therefore, is it any wonder that immigration laws are subject to the same whims?  On the one hand, you have millions of people who have followed the letter and spirit of the law in their efforts to come to America and become citizens of these United States.  On the other hand, you have millions of people who have simply walked or driven in, taken up residence, used up local and national resources, demanded cultural accommodations, and created a wide crack in our "rule of law."

Some local law enforcement agencies have attempted to enforce the immigration laws, but have been penalized by the federal government which claims jurisdiction.  The same actions have been taken against states that attempt to enforce these laws within their borders.  The problem, of course, has been that the federal government has been more interested in asserting its power than enforcing the laws.  Consequently, we now have somewhere in excess of 10 million illegal aliens residing in the U.S.

This same federal government which paid people up to 99 weeks for not working has argued that these illegal aliens benefit the U.S. because they take jobs that nobody else will take.  You may find that to be a non-issue, but others will rightly ask what are the jobs that illegal aliens take that others refuse?  Construction?  Agriculture?  Service jobs?  And isn't it illegal to hire illegals?  Or is this another version of "don't ask, don't tell?"

Now the federal government says it is going to get serious about illegal immigration.  It will come up with a "path to citizenship" that makes the 10 million illegal aliens not so illegal.  A so-called "gang of eight" congressmen are working on just such a proposal.

A bipartisan group of eight senators plans to announce they have agreed on a set of principles for comprehensive immigration reform.
The deal, which will be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.
The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona. [source]
The Miami Herald reports:
The Gang of Eight’s plan rests on four "pillars:"
1. Create a tough but fair path to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants currently living in the United States that is contingent upon securing our borders and tracking whether legal immigrants have left the country when required.
2. Reform our legal immigration system to better recognize the importance of characteristics that will help build the American economy and strengthen American families.
3. Create an effective employment verification system that will prevent identity theft and end the hiring of future unauthorized workers.
4. Establish an improved process for admitting future workers to serve our nation’s workforce needs, while simultaneously protecting all workers.
The plan is just a framework. So many of the hard details concerning how long people would wait for citizenship, how the border is declared secure and roughly how much it would all cost will have to be worked out in the coming months.
The Senate legislation, whenever it’s drafted, will also spell out how the visa process would be streamlined, what new types of work permits would be available and how the government plans to stop businesses from hiring illegal immigrants.

Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/01/28/3204447/rubio-senate-gang-of-eight-unveil.html#storylink=cpy
In other words, the law was not obeyed, so "let's make a deal."

I like that concept and think that should Sen. Diane Feinstein's firearms legislation pass that millions of American should simple ignore the law and force the federal government to "make a deal."  What?  You say that's not the same thing?  Of course not.  Senator Feinstein and her cohorts are attempting to ignore a Constitutional right that Americans have.  The "gang of eight" are simply trying to grant Constitutional protection to those who have broken the laws of the nation.  So, indeed, they are not the same thing.

House votes overwhelmingly to defuse debt crisis, decides to increase borrowing limit
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House overwhelmingly passed a bill Wednesday to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first-time default for at least four months, defusing a looming crisis setting up a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit.

Federal Government Absolutely Not Serious About Addressing Debt

SEARCH BLOG: TAXES and SPENDING.

Disregard everything you hear coming from President Obama, Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, and John Boehner regarding the so-called negotiations on the so-called fiscal cliff.  It is absolutely, positively, without question, business-as-usual in Washington D.C.

FISCAL CLIFF NEGOTIATIONS LEAVE HEDGE FUND TAX LOOPHOLE UNSCATHED.

So, if the fiscal cliff negotiations increase tax revenue by about $600 billion over ten years ... about $60 billion per year ... and the tax loopholes enacted reduce tax revenue by more than $70 billion per year... where's the beef?

HR 6649 - Reward Turkish Government For Threatening Israel

SEARCH BLOG: TURKEY.

On the last day of the year, there has been an attempt to allow President Obama to send, for free, two U.S. frigates to Turkey.  This has been receiving bi-partisan opposition in the House of Representatives because Turkey, over the past year, has used their navy to threaten Israel and Cyprus and to forcefully aid Hamas.

Other frigates were being offered up to Mexico and Thailand for no cost.  In addition, Taiwan would be allowed to purchase four frigates.

The DOD has offered up these transfers as a matter of "national security interests."  The argument is that the bill has been available for examination for two weeks [during the time the Congress has been away or working on the fiscal cliff issues].

After debate, the Chairman called for a voice vote to suspend normal rules so that this bill could be passed.  The vote passed with at least a dozen aye votes and a couple of nay votes.

In another voice vote, the House passed H.R. 6649, a bill authorizing the transfer of 10 frigates to U.S. allies Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey. There was some debate over whether two of these frigates should be given to Turkey given that country's recent posture toward Europe, but despite this opposition, no one asked for a recorded vote on the bill. [source]
That's how things get done in Obama's world.  Full debate and mark-up through committee for renaming post offices; abbreviated debate with no committee mark-up and most members absent for important foreign affairs votes.  And Turkey gets to expand its navy to further threaten Israel and aid terrorists.

US TO DONATE TWO FRIGATES TO TURKEY

What Do White Males And Christians Have In Common?

SEARCH BLOG: RELIGION and GENDER and HEALTH CARE.

Neither are a "special interest" group favored by the Obama administration.

Consequently, while Obamabuddies are readily exempt from Obamacare, white males and Christians find themselves on the outside looking in.  That is probably justified in Obamathink because white males and Christians are oppressors.

From Fox News:

Hobby Lobby Stores has appealed a federal judge’s decision denying the craft supply chain’s request to not provide employees with insurance that covers morning-after and week-after birth control pills, as mandated by the ObamaCare law.
The Christian-owned company asked for relief in the face of fines they say could reach $1 million a day for not providing the coverage.
The appeal was filed Tuesday in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals after a federal judge in Oklahoma on Monday denied the owners’ request for a temporary injunction against the provisions of the Obama administration's health law.
The chain's appeal states in part that Chief Executive Officer David Green his family in less than six weeks “must either violate their faith by covering abortion-causing drugs or be exposed to severe penalties -- including fines of up to $1.3 million per day, annual penalties of about $26 million and exposure to private suits.” [more.]
Here is a link to some of the organizations and companies exempted from Obamacare.  The question is: why should there need to be an exemption ... or hundreds of exemptions ... if the law were reasonable and just?  The answer: the law is unreasonable and unjust.

As noted in The Blaze:
“Documents released in a classic Friday afternoon news dump show that labor unions representing 543,812 workers received waivers from President Barack Obama‘s signature legislation,” writes Paul Conner of the Daily Caller. “By contrast, private employers with a total of 69,813 employees, many of whom work for small businesses, were granted waivers.”
Because of the backlash over the waivers, HHS announced last summer that it would stop accepting applications for one-year waivers and would simply grant or deny waivers all the way through the end of 2013, according to The Hill.

The War On: Name Your Victim

SEARCH BLOG: SPECIAL INTERESTS.

Now that the 2012 elections are over and the victims have re-elected President Obama, we should stand back and examine how stereotypes have become so ingrained that all you have to do to be re-elected after four years of outstanding failure is declare that you are against the WAR ON [VICTIMS].

So, just to make it clear, here are three very important victim groups that re-elected President Obama.

You got your women victims...

and Latino victims...

and African American victims.

President Obama focused on these special interest groups while taking firm action against the oppressor group.

Why are these stereotypes any more unfair than the opposite stereotypes?

If women pay more than men for health insurance, why is that more unfair than men paying more than women for car insurance and life insurance?

If some white males earn more than some Latinos and some blacks, why is that more unfair than if some Latinos and some blacks earn more than some white males?

Our first half-white President made up some half-assed stories and 51%-ers swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.  What do you mean you don't like the descriptive phrase before "President?"

The New York Times Forgot How Latest Israel-Hamas Conflict Began

SEARCH BLOG: ISRAEL.

From The New York Times:

Conflict Summary.
On Nov. 14, 2012, Israel launched an air campaign against targets associated with Hamas, the hardline Palestinian party that has ruled Gaza since 2007. It was the first major conflict between the two since Israel’s Operation Cast Lead killed about 1,400 Gazans in three weeks of air and ground assaults in response to repeated rocket fire starting in December 2008.
Since then, the two sides had observed an informal and uneasy cease-fire. In recent months, the number of rockets fired into southern Israel by militant groups in Gaza had risen. Hamas had mostly held its fire while it struggled to rein in those groups.
But it has responded forcefully to the new assault, sending more than 300 rockets into Israel over 24 hours, with several penetrating the heart of Israel’s population center around Tel Aviv.
I won't say that the reporting is intentionally biased, but it strains credulity to believe that The New York Times simply forgot that Hamas had begun the conflict with four days of missile attacks into Israel.  This Orwellian black is white reporting by The New York Times is simply astounding... and unworthy.

U.S. Voters: Were 51% Fooled All Of The Time?

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and GOVERNMENT.

You can't fool all of the people all of the time - Abraham Lincoln.  But President Obama has learn how to fool enough of the people all of the time... with the help of some very accommodating media types... to get re-elected and continue his course toward a shipwrecked America... or "cliff-wrecked" America if you choose. [image.]

Those who were not fooled can hardly have the satisfaction of saying "I told you so" because there is no satisfaction where we are headed.  The stock market has fallen over 7% in one month.  For you union types, that means your pension funds have taken a nasty hit... which you are cheering on because in your minds that hurts "Wall Street."  The GOP is making nice with the president.  For you conservatives, that means 4 more years of the 4 years just finished.  The EPA and courts are playing havoc with the energy market which means that 100% of the voters will face significantly higher energy costs over the next four years.

How could those 51%-ers have voted for the captain of the shipwreck?  Victor Hansen at the National Review has his own thesis on that score.
Coincidentally, right after the election we heard that Iran had attacked a U.S. drone in international waters. [so much for negotiating with our best new friends in the Middle East]
Coincidentally, we just learned that new food-stamp numbers were “delayed” and that millions more became new recipients in the months before the election. [so much for those three "summers of recovery".]
Coincidentally, we now gather that the federal relief effort following Hurricane Sandy was not so smooth, even as New Jersey governor Chris Christie and Barack Obama high-fived it. Instead, in Katrina-like fashion, tens of thousands are still without power or shelter two weeks after the storm.  [so much for the new and improved version of federal government.]
Coincidentally, we now learn that Obama’s plan of letting tax rates increase for the “fat cat” 2 percent who make over $250,000 a year would not even add enough new revenue to cover 10 percent of the annual deficit. How he would get the other 90 percent in cuts, we are never told. [so much for "fair sharing".]
Coincidentally, we now learn that the vaunted DREAM Act would at most cover only about 10 percent to 20 percent of illegal immigrants. As part of the bargain, does Obama have a post-election Un-DREAM Act to deport the other 80 percent who do not qualify since either they just recently arrived in America, are not working, are not in school or the military, are on public assistance, or have a criminal record?  [so much for addressing the "social justice" issue of not enforcing our sovereign borders.]
Coincidentally, now that the election is over, the scandal over the killings of Americans in Libya seems warranted because of the abject failure to heed pleas for more security before the attack and assistance during it. And the scandal is about more than just the cover-up of fabricating an absurd myth of protesters mad over a two-month-old video — just happening to show up on the anniversary of 9/11 with machine guns and rockets. [so much for truth.]
"Coincidentally" is the conglomeration of  a variety of left-leaning media spinners that found it convenient to distort or delay news that might have been considered less-than-desirable despite their actions being less-than-truthful or less-than-ethical.

The Gender Gap - The Feminization Of The U.S.

SEARCH BLOG: GENDER and POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Women decided the 2012 presidential election in favor of Barack Obama.  Part of it was the notion that the Republican Party was waging a "war on women."  Many women believe that.  Yet the facts of what is actually happening in the U.S. seem not to square with that notion.  The reality is that the "cards" increasingly are being stacked against males who are pretty much on their own when it comes to governmental and organizational support systems.

Perhaps you will find this interesting.  Simply click on the links below and compare.

For you educators, this should be enlightening as well:
Testosterone has a powerful influence on brain and body development from the prenatal period, and throughout childhood and adolescence into adulthood. One of the primary reasons why men are being so thoroughly supplanted on college campuses by women, is the refusal of educational systems from K12 and beyond to acknowledge the differences in the ways that boys learn -- largely as a result of different hormonal effects in the brains of men vs women. Why Romney Lost

SEARCH BLOG: ROMNEY and OBAMA and SPECIAL INTERESTS.

Romney miscalculated.

No, he wasn't wrong on the issues... necessarily.  He did have a vision going forward... and specific plans to address the underlying problems facing all of us.  He spoke to all Americans about a better economy and more opportunity. But he miscalculated about what was important.

Obama did not miscalculate.

Obama's team better understood that politics is not like war at all.  In war, there is a rallying cry to defend the nation.  People are willing to sacrifice so that the nation is protected and survives.  World War II showed the essence of that.  We call the people who fought and sacrificed during that war "the greatest generation" not for what they got, but for what they gave.

Politics is the opposite of war.  Romney's team failed to grasp that.  It is not about rallying Americans to do what is right and best for America.  Obama's team grasped the essence of politics and what it takes to win: appealing to the selfishness and self-interests of any and all self-described "groups."

Obama won by appealing to:

  • Unions - special treatment in the automobile companies' forced bankruptcies
  • Women - special treatment in the form of "free" contraceptives and fighting against the "war on women"
  • Homosexuals - ending "don't ask; don't tell" and supporting "gay" marriage
  • Hispanics - pushing for amnesty for illegal aliens
  • Blacks - expanding social "benefits"
  • Muslims - expressing his common heritage and experience
  • Government workers - expanding government
  • Elderly - fear mongering
Obama's team wove specific stories or provided specific incentives or special privileges that made each group feel threatened by Romney... regardless of the real relationship of those stories, incentives and privileges to the well-being of the people who saw themselves as "members" of those groups.  Obama appealed to greed and fear... couched in terms of "fairness."

Meanwhile, Romney tried to appeal to the intellect and logic of everyone without regard to their special interests.  He appealed to concepts and ideals.  He appealed to the America of the 1940s.

Obama's implied slogan was, "Ask not what you can do for America; ask what America can do for you."  He appealed to the western Balkans of the 2010s.

Obama has come a long way from the Democratic presidency of John F. Kennedy.  We've come a long way from "the greatest generation."

Unions Flexing Their Muscles While Others Get Hurt

SEARCH BLOG: UNIONS.

UPDATE:

Here in Michigan, the Service Employees International Union has siphoned off well in excess of $32 million through a sweetheart deal with the former Governor (D) Jennifer Granholm  from individuals who are home health care providers.  That siphoning continues despite the fact that it was specifically outlawed by the current legislature and governor... although how they manage to do it seems a bit of a mystery.

This abuse has been written about extensively in the Mackinac Center for Public Policy and now the issue of government employee unions is raised in the Hoover Institution.
The hottest topic in Michigan today is not the looming presidential election. Rather, it is Proposal 2—“Protect Our Jobs,” which will constitutionalize collective bargaining in the state for public sector unions. As drafted, the proposal gives to “the people . . . the rights to organize together to form, join, or assist labor organizations, and to bargain collectively with a public or private employer through an exclusive representative of the employees’ choosing”—provided that this proposal is not preempted, or overridden, by federal labor law.
It is not clear from its general language whether Proposal 2 will roll back any of the modest reforms that Michigan now has put in place as a counterweight to union power, but the initiative is certainly intended to bolster union power in the state.
Michigan, long an economic basket-case, has started to turn the corner under Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who knows that the state’s fortunes won’t improve if it doubles down on a system of labor law that has proven itself to be a major failure. As the governor has argued, Proposal 2 is a step in the wrong direction.
We should be profoundly skeptical of any proposal that aims to improve the lot of the “people” by giving some people rights that necessarily bind others—in this instance, the public at large or the owners and employers of private firms. The folks on the receiving end of these collective bargaining laws are people too. No system has a prayer of long-term success if the gains that some people get by state coercion are smaller than the losses those laws inflict on others.
In this instance, the virulent economic protectionism of the “Protect Our Jobs” provision means that the losses will far outweigh the gains. Proposal 2 does not remove transactional frictions or regulatory barriers from the economy. Rather, it is a partisan call to benefit unions and union members at a time when most states around the country are rightly questioning whether the special protections for government employees have gone too far, especially on such key matters as pensions, health care, and work rules. [more]

Affirmative Action, Diversity, And Racial Preferences Add Up To ... Failure

SEARCH BLOG: DIVERSITY.

The New York Times has an editorial that tries to re-frame Affirmative Action from a race-based policy into an economic class-based policy.   The fact that... percentage-wise... there are more black and Latinos in the "poverty" income range would just be a happy coincidence for those who wish to continue supporting the racial wolf in new sheep's clothing.

The title of a recent paper by Roland G. Fryer Jr., a Harvard economist, summarizes the trends: “Racial inequality in the 21st century: The declining significance of discrimination.”
Racial gaps remain large enough that colleges would struggle to recruit as many black and Latino students without explicitly taking race into account. But some experts, like Mr. Kahlenberg, think they could come close. To do so, they would need to consider not just income, but also wealth, family structure and neighborhood poverty. Those factors disproportionately afflict black and Latino students — and hold back children from life’s starting line.
Mr. Kahlenberg argues that wealth is especially defensible, because it can capture discrimination’s intergenerational effects. Some universities in states where racial preferences are banned, including California, have begun taking small steps to consider class more fully. [more]
So, now the social engineering programs that destroyed the black family and led to endemic government dependency, educational failure, and a sociopathic sub-culture needs to have a "tweek" so that it can continue.  Good thinking!

Dr. Mark Perry, economist, highlighted some additional superior thinking on the part of the Florida Board of Education:
"The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.
On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. ...
[Dr. Perry comments] Call me cynical, but I somehow think that Mr. Lopez, Ms. Robinson, and the black and Hispanic parents calling Florida’s new academic double-standards “racist” would probably all support race-based preferences/profiling in college admissions?  But what’s the difference?  Aren’t race-based preferences and double standards, aka affirmative action, for college admissions, just as “racist” as race-based double standards for academic outcomes for math and reading proficiencies for elementary and high school students?"  [read more]
Don't you think that deserves a graphic?  Just so you understand, the Florida Board of Education has said that this is what success looks like... by race:

It looks as if the argument is that, if you are black or Latino, you are deficient because you are deprived so we'll accommodate that "deprivation deficiency" to the next level where... unless something is done to adjust "success" measures leading to graduation... the likelihood of success decreases dramatically.

However, if you are Asian or white and have the misfortune to be poor... well, suck it up!

The fact that this issue is still before the Supreme Court almost 50 years after the "solution" was implemented by Lyndon B. Johnson says a lot about the "solution."  In fact, one might also conclude that the very people who put together these programs with the expectation that blacks and Latinos cannot  compete with whites and Asians... are the real racists.

Not Golden For Obama

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA.

From The Wall Street Journal:

When Barack Obama ran for president in 2008, no major U.S. corporation did more to finance his campaign than Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
This election, none has done more to help defeat him.
Prompted by what they call regulatory attacks on their business and personal attacks on their character, executives and employees of Goldman Sachs have largely abandoned Mr. Obama and are now the top sources of money to presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the Republican Party.
In the four decades since Congress created the campaign-finance system, no company's employees have switched sides so abruptly, moving from top supporters of one camp to the top of its rival, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of campaign-finance data compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. [read more]
I used to think it odd that Big Finance would finance Bigger Government, but the Obama administration has done more in 4 years to expose the graft and inbreeding between the two than any other U.S. presidency.  This is not a matter of political philosophy; it is a matter of opportunity to put one's hand in the till [almost wrote "mitt" but thought better of it].

The question is: is the turnabout at Goldman Sachs somehow supposed to make me feel better about Mitt Romney?  I'm satisfied that Romney is a better alternative than Obama already.  Having one of Obama's buddy corporations switch sides doesn't make my leg tingle.

The Worldwide Consequences of Obama's Manufactured Crisis Strategy

By James Simpson

While socialist leaders live in lavish style, in every country where socialist policies are imposed, they measurably worsen the lives of everyday citizens in direct proportion to their scope.  Even countries with vast natural resources, like Russia, founder because their economies are constructed on the fatally flawed economic principles of socialism.
Despite this, they still manage to live on, in many cases hanging by mere threads for years.
How?
The dirty little secret of socialism is that it cannot survive without capitalism.  Capitalist countries provide the resources necessary for these socialist governments to continue.  In addition to providing a market for their goods, Western nations keep socialist countries afloat through grants and loans from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and other governmental institutions, as well as huge investments by private companies. [read full article]
Here in Michigan, that strategy has been pushed by the Service Employees International Union to the tune of $32 million siphoned off from families and caregivers.
Mackinac Center Legal Foundation Asks MERC to Reverse Forced Unionization of Home-Based Caregivers
Seeks return of $3 million in skimmed 'dues'
MIDLAND — The Mackinac Center Legal Foundation today asked the Michigan Employment Relations Commission for a declaratory ruling reversing a 2005 MERC decision that allowed the forced unionization of tens of thousands of home-based caregivers. These victims, most of whom are family members caring for disabled loved ones who receive a Medicaid stipend, have been classified as government employees and have seen $32 million in “union dues” skimmed by the Service Employees International Union since November 2005.
“The commission needs to recognize that these people are not and never were government employees, especially in light of recent state legislation,” said Patrick J. Wright, director of the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation. “We saw this same scheme take place with home-based day care providers. It was wrong then, and it is wrong now.”  [full article here]

Rahm Emanuel Does A Scott Walker On Chicago Teachers

SEARCH BLOG: TEACHERS

Rahm Emanuel of "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste" fame, now is walking in the shoes of those he used to condemn and doesn't like it. [image]

The Chicago Tribune reports:

Clark Street in front of CPS headquarters in the Loop is a sea of red-shirted teachers chanting and waving signs.
"Hey Rahm, how many kids in your child's classroom?" one sign read. Another said, "Use your outdoor voice."
"Hey, hey, ho, ho. Rahm Emanuel has got to go," they chanted.
Many in the peaceful crowd said they were surprised at how many teachers showed up to rally.
"This is an amazing display of democracy," said Rick Sawicki, a 7th grade teacher at Evergreen Middle School. "It is a wonderful lesson for children and adults alike. I'm honored that we are all sticking together. We all want what is fair. We want to make sure everyone is treated fairly, just like I teach my children."
What happened to that liberal idealogue?  Geez, even Paul Ryan is offering his support.
"Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong," Ryan said in Portland, Ore., according to a pool report transcript. "We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel."
Imagine the outcry from Rahm Emanuel if he were still Obama's Chief of Staff and the mayor of Chicago were a Republican.  It would have been "solidarity" all the way.  Now he wants to negotiate because "this is a strike of choice" that is "unnecessary."  If it is so "unnecessary" and Rahm is so reasonable, why did the teachers decide to go on strike for the first time in 25 years?

Could it be that Rahm only touts the liberal line when it benefits him?  Looks like karma from here.

Energy Independence By 2020

SEARCH BLOG: ENERGY and ROMNEY

In last night's nomination acceptance speech, Mitt Romney set a goal of having the U.S. become energy independent by 2020.  That's similar to John Kennedy's goal of putting a man on the moon... a huge leap of faith.

In the post "North American energy independence by 2020″, David Middleton gives all sorts of facts and figures that conclude that "Based on these numbers, North American energy independence could be achieved by 2027." Now that is North American, not U.S., energy independence.  Still, that is directionally where Mitt Romney wants to take the U.S. [h/t Anthony Watts]

There are many issues to be resolved ... and quickly ... if the U.S. is to seek energy independence.
  • Export policy - would ... and could ... the U.S. restrict its exports of oil, coal, and natural gas to force consumption at the local level?  Conversely, would the U.S. make it more difficult to import oil from beyond North America?
  • Regulation - can the Environmental Protection Agency regulations be reeled in?  Can the regulatory and permitting processes be streamlined and accelerated?
  • Taxation - will tax code reflect energy policy?
  • Overcoming entrenched opposition - becoming energy independent is not simply a matter of resources development.
The fastest way to energy independence is:
  • Reversal of the coal-to-natural-gas conversions occurring under the Obama administration for the generation of electricity.
  • Expansion of nuclear powered electricity generation to augment coal as a substitute for natural gas.
  • Development of a natural gas infrastructure to fuel vehicles as an alternative use of natural gas rather than to fuel electricity plants ... combined with incentives to automotive manufacturers to expand their offerings for natural gas powered vehicles ... a decades-old technology that is primarily limited to fleets at present.
  • Expansion of oil exploration in federally-controlled lands/offshore.
  • Streamlining the judicial process to settle a myriad of blocking lawsuits that will come from those special interests who are philosophically opposed to these actions.
This is all possible under the heading "anything is possible."  Is it probable or plausible?  A better question is: will someone lead the way in the face of fanatical and often irrational opposition?

Welcome To Obama's Economic Recovery Bomb

SEARCH BLOG: HOUSING

Most Democratic Party members will attempt to defend the well-intentioned efforts of their party to make sure everyone has an opportunity to get what is "rightfully" theirs.  Thus, there are special provisions for medical school entrance and getting loans for housing that could not possibly have any downside.

As reported by Paul Sperry via PrairiePundit:

With studies showing home foreclosures hitting blacks and Latinos hardest, the Obama administration’s answer is baffling as well as destructive — to lend them more money, repeating the cycle of easy credit that led to the housing boom and bust.
A new AARP report finds that even elderly minorities are facing serious mortgage delinquencies. Fifty-and-over African-Americans, for example, are almost twice as likely to lose their home as older whites.
“This crisis is far from over,” AARP policy chief Debra Whitman said. “We need to think about more creative solutions.”

President Obama’s solutions, however, look a lot like the original problems that landed minorities in the financial mess they’re in today.
For starters, his new consumer credit watchdog agency has quietly adopted weaker, minority-friendly mortgage underwriting guidelines first published in a landmark 1994 policy statement released by the little-known Interagency Task Force on Fair Lending.
The 20-page “Policy Statement on Discrimination in Lending” — signed by the heads of 10 federal agencies, including then-Attorney General Janet Reno — warned banks that “the agencies will not tolerate lending discrimination in any form.”
It was a noble goal — undercut by the fact that the statement also set lower standards by which banks could qualify low-income minorities with spotty credit.
“Applying different lending standards or offering different levels of assistance to applicants who are members of a protected (minority) class is permissible in some circumstances,” it said.
“Providing different treatment to applicants to address past discrimination would be permissible if done in response to a court order.”
The policy planted the seeds of the mortgage crisis, as lenders abandoned prudent underwriting standards altogether. Yet the 1-year-old Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created by the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul, has dusted off the Clinton-era regulation.
Well, doesn't that explain a lot?  President Obama believes in hoping that the same mistake will not have the same results.  Time for a change.

There is always an easy solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong.

... The Government is on course for an embarrassing showdown with the European Union, business groups and environmental charities after refusing to guarantee that billions of pounds of revenue it stands to earn from carbon-permit trading will be spent on combating climate change.

Go back to 1999-2000 and see what the Fed did. They are following the same pattern for 2005-06. If it ain't broke, the Fed will fix it... and good!
August 29, 2006 The Federal Reserve always acts on old information... and is the only cause of U.S. recessions.
December 5, 2006 Last spring I wrote about what I saw to be a sharp downturn in the economy in the "rustbelt" states, particularly Michigan.
March 28, 2007
The Federal Reserve sees no need to cut interest rates in the light of adverse recent economic data, Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.
The Fed chairman said ”to date, the incoming data have supported the view that the current stance of policy is likely to foster sustainable economic growth and a gradual ebbing in core inflation”.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.
August 11, 2007 I suspect that within 6 months the Federal Reserve will be forced to lower interest rates before housing becomes a black hole.
September 11, 2007 It only means that the overall process has flaws guaranteeing it will be slow in responding to changes in the economy... and tend to over-react as a result.
September 18, 2007 I think a 4% rate is really what is needed to turn the economy back on the right course. The rate may not get there, but more cuts will be needed with employment rates down and foreclosure rates up.
October 25, 2007 How long will it be before I will be able to write: "The Federal Reserve lowered its lending rate to 4% in response to the collapse of the U.S. housing market and massive numbers of foreclosures that threaten the banking and mortgage sectors."
November 28, 2007 FED VICE CHAIRMAN DONALD KOHN
"Should the elevated turbulence persist, it would increase the possibility of further tightening in financial conditions for households and businesses," he said.

"Uncertainties about the economic outlook are unusually high right now," he said. "These uncertainties require flexible and pragmatic policymaking -- nimble is the adjective I used a few weeks ago."

December 13, 2007 [from The Christian Science Monitor]
"The odds of a recession are now above 50 percent," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "We are right on the edge of a recession in part because of the Fed's reluctance to reduce interest rates more aggressively." [see my comments of September 11]
January 7, 2008 The real problem now is that consumers can't rescue the economy and manufacturing, which is already weakening, will continue to weaken. We've gutted the forces that could avoid a downturn. The question is not whether there will be a recession, but can it be dampened sufficiently so that it is very short.
January 11, 2008 This is death by a thousand cuts.
January 13, 2008 [N.Y. Times]
“The question is not whether we will have a recession, but how deep and prolonged it will be,” said David Rosenberg, the chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch. “Even if the Fed’s moves are going to work, it will not show up until the later part of 2008 or 2009.”
January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
