Justin Bieber's Gun Assault

SEARCH BLOG: 2ND AMENDMENT.

Recently, small children were suspended from school for pointing with their index fingers.  That was considered extremely dangerous behavior by the school.  Now Justin Bieber is being investigated for possible assault charges for tossing foam projectiles.

As Voltaire said: "Common sense is not so common."  Some of these so-called gun-control advocates have their anuses squeezed so tightly they are simply spewing shit through their mouths.

Never Let A Crisis Go To Waste

SEARCH BLOG: EGYPT.

It seems that Egypt's President Morsi has taken some advice from President Obama's former Chief of Staff and now mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.

Egypt's armed forces chief has warned the current political crisis "could lead to a collapse of the state".
General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, in comments posted on the military's Facebook page, said such a collapse could "threaten future generations".
He made his statement following a large military deployment in three cities along the Suez Canal where a state of emergency has been declared.
More than 50 people have died in days of protests and violence.
Overnight, thousands of people in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez - where some of the worst unrest has been - ignored a night-time curfew to take to the streets. [source]
This crisis has allowed President Morsi to use the army to quell opposition to his Islamist constitution and imposition of Sharia law.

There seems to be something about people that resents elected officials who use their positions to try to fundamentally change their societies and trample the rights and freedoms that have been a tradition for centuries.  Fortunately, here in the United States, we don't have politicians like that, do we?

Hmmm.  We have fundamentally changed our debt.

Ignoring Immigration Laws And Calling It Reform

SEARCH BLOG: IMMIGRATION.

The people of the United States have had a principle that the rule of law rather than the whims of leaders was necessary and required to have this republic function properly.  As with any principle, this one can be and has been subverted many times for many "good reasons."  This subversion has occurred millions of times in ways small and subtle to presidential "recess appointments."  Even the courts of the land will jump and twist through legal "double think" to fit judgments to political expediency.

Therefore, is it any wonder that immigration laws are subject to the same whims?  On the one hand, you have millions of people who have followed the letter and spirit of the law in their efforts to come to America and become citizens of these United States.  On the other hand, you have millions of people who have simply walked or driven in, taken up residence, used up local and national resources, demanded cultural accommodations, and created a wide crack in our "rule of law."

Some local law enforcement agencies have attempted to enforce the immigration laws, but have been penalized by the federal government which claims jurisdiction.  The same actions have been taken against states that attempt to enforce these laws within their borders.  The problem, of course, has been that the federal government has been more interested in asserting its power than enforcing the laws.  Consequently, we now have somewhere in excess of 10 million illegal aliens residing in the U.S.

This same federal government which paid people up to 99 weeks for not working has argued that these illegal aliens benefit the U.S. because they take jobs that nobody else will take.  You may find that to be a non-issue, but others will rightly ask what are the jobs that illegal aliens take that others refuse?  Construction?  Agriculture?  Service jobs?  And isn't it illegal to hire illegals?  Or is this another version of "don't ask, don't tell?"

Now the federal government says it is going to get serious about illegal immigration.  It will come up with a "path to citizenship" that makes the 10 million illegal aliens not so illegal.  A so-called "gang of eight" congressmen are working on just such a proposal.

A bipartisan group of eight senators plans to announce they have agreed on a set of principles for comprehensive immigration reform.
The deal, which will be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.
The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona. [source]
The Miami Herald reports:
The Gang of Eight’s plan rests on four "pillars:"
1. Create a tough but fair path to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants currently living in the United States that is contingent upon securing our borders and tracking whether legal immigrants have left the country when required.
2. Reform our legal immigration system to better recognize the importance of characteristics that will help build the American economy and strengthen American families.
3. Create an effective employment verification system that will prevent identity theft and end the hiring of future unauthorized workers.
4. Establish an improved process for admitting future workers to serve our nation’s workforce needs, while simultaneously protecting all workers.
The plan is just a framework. So many of the hard details concerning how long people would wait for citizenship, how the border is declared secure and roughly how much it would all cost will have to be worked out in the coming months.
The Senate legislation, whenever it’s drafted, will also spell out how the visa process would be streamlined, what new types of work permits would be available and how the government plans to stop businesses from hiring illegal immigrants.

Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/01/28/3204447/rubio-senate-gang-of-eight-unveil.html#storylink=cpy
In other words, the law was not obeyed, so "let's make a deal."

I like that concept and think that should Sen. Diane Feinstein's firearms legislation pass that millions of American should simple ignore the law and force the federal government to "make a deal."  What?  You say that's not the same thing?  Of course not.  Senator Feinstein and her cohorts are attempting to ignore a Constitutional right that Americans have.  The "gang of eight" are simply trying to grant Constitutional protection to those who have broken the laws of the nation.  So, indeed, they are not the same thing.

Obama Says "Shall Not Infringe" Is An Outdated Concept

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and RIGHTS.

President Obama is all about gun control now that he has solved the U.S. economic problems and gained peace in the Middle East and Africa.  Although there are federal, state, and local laws/regulations/ordinances regarding guns and gun ownership, President Obama felt compelled to issue "executive orders," which supposedly have the weight of Constitutional law in his mind, to further constrain We The People from exercising our basic rights.

Today, the President is announcing that he and the Administration will:
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.  [PRIVACY?]
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.  [PRIVACY?]
3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.  [PRIVACY?]

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.  [ANTI-GUN PROPAGANDA?]

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies. [DISABLE OR CRIPPLE PRIVATELY OWNED FIREARMS?]
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes. [REQUIRE DOCTORS TO ASK ABOUT GUNS?]
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.  [REQUIRES THEM TO DO SO?]
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.  [WHO WILL DO WHAT?]
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.  [PUT YOUR HEAD BETWEEN YOUR KNEES AND KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE?  WHAT ABOUT ARMED SECURITY GUARDS?]
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.  [THOSE SERVICES THAT HAVE BEEN CUT BACK?]
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.  [MEANING?]
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.  [MORE REGULATIONS THAT DO WHAT?]
23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.  [HAS THERE ACTUALLY BEEN ANY "DIALOGUE" WITH ANYONE BY THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION?]
Many people will say that all of those sound just fine... common sense, if you will.  An innocuous question here, a regulatory roadblock there, minor restrictions here, tying gun control to health care there.  Nothing to take away the 2nd Amendment, just chip away at it some more.

New York Takes First Step Toward Abolishing Constitutional Rights

SEARCH BLOG: RIGHTS.

New York has taken the first step toward the elimination of a constitutional right.  Apparently, in New York, English has been replaced with double-think and double-speak.  The word "not" is double-spoken resulting in "not not."
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.
George Orwell, "1984", first sentence
This is now "progress."  These are "progressives."  Remember this day.  First they limit the number of bullets.  Then they will tax the bullets 100%, 200%, 1000%.  Then they will require a permit to purchase ammunition.  Then they will make ammunition illegal.  But you will be able to keep your gun... as a memento of when you could actually bear arms.

"This is for your safety; this is for your own good."
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

What to conclude? Strict gun laws in Great Britain and Australia haven't made their people noticeably safer, nor have they prevented massacres. The two major countries held up as models for the U.S. don't provide much evidence that strict gun laws will solve our problems.

Veterans Day - Remembering

SEARCH BLOG: MILITARY.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. [source]
Liberty and human rights face constant challenges from the forces of both secular and religious ideologies that value the Constitutional rights of the individual less than their political or religious beliefs.  It is, ultimately, the men and women of the armed forces that hold those forces at bay.  It is up to the citizens of this nation to ensure that no one person or no one party or no one ideology prevents our military from that mission of protection... either through the corruption of our government or deprivation of the military's needed resources.

Muslims Not Allowed To Build Mosques - Leaving The Country

SEARCH BLOG: ISLAM.

Religious persecution doesn't just mean cartoons of Mohammed or insulting movies.

"There are just 440,000 Muslims left in the nation, half the prewar figure, the group said.  The report came on the heels of talks between the Imam and European Council President Herman van Rompuy about difficulties faced by Muslims.  The Imam reportedly complained that while dozens of churches were built, no building permissions were given for mosques.  “The Imam already waits 13 years on permission to build just a small mosque.”  Authorities so far refused to return hundreds of nationalized mosques, despite a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights to do so."
You might want to read more here... you should.  Someday, the tables could be turned.  h/t WZ

Such restrictions on the right and ability to gather for worship are antithetical to Western tradition.  The European Court of Human Rights is correct in condemning this policy of discrimination and exclusion.  Imagine how American Christians would feel if their freedom to build churches and gather for worship were prevented by the government being unwilling to grant building permits.  There would be an outcry and a demand for the removal of those in government causing the problem.

The Catholic Church And The Affordable Care Act

SEARCH BLOG: HEALTH CARE and RELIGION

Catholics continue to anguish over the provisions of the Affordable Care Act that require Catholic schools, universities, charities, and hospitals... and any other Catholic organization that is not directly part of a church... to provide insurance coverage for contraception, abortions and sterilizations.

My sister-in-law is a devout Catholic and sends me links to the debate raging inside the Church.  This is the latest article that discusses the not-so-great options that the Catholic Church has regarding these issues.
A Mandate to Disobey

The Affordable Care Act mandates that employers offer and individuals buy insurance that provides free contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization. It seems we have passed from a society that allows legal access to these drugs and services to one that insists that they must be free, subsidized by everyone’s insurance premiums. Catholics and others are no longer being asked to tolerate what we believe to be wrong; now we must participate. [read the full article]
I'm not a Catholic and have, at times, been at odds with the practices of that church.  But I understand the conundrum of being faced with mandates that are diametrically opposed to one's faith and principles and having... apparently... no good option to fight it.

My response to my sister-in-law was this:
Seems simple. Close all Catholic schools, universities, hospitals, and charities for one month and direct all students and patients to go to public counterparts. The strain on the public system will be overwhelming. Then Catholic officials can go public with the reason: the ACA requires Catholic organizations to violate their faith and principles. The organizations will re-open when declared exempt from those ACA requirements.
A tough and costly sacrifice for the faith. But an effective one I'll wager.
If the Catholic Church is really concerned about the tenets of its faith being compromised by the ACA, then a real sacrifice in defense of that faith is appropriate.  Were the Catholic Church to merely announce that it was taking these actions, there would emergency meetings in Congress and throughout the United States trying to figure out how to deal with profound public crisis.

The exemptions to the ACA would be forthcoming... immediately.

When Telling The Truth About Islamists Is Hate

SEARCH BLOG: ISLAM

An interesting article with an interesting premise:

They are, perhaps, the most dangerous words ever written:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
That, for those who don’t know, is the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
What makes those words dangerous is that they guarantee a freedom that, in the wrong hands (or even the right hands) can cause upset and outrage, even topple regimes. America confers that kind of power — freedom of expression, unfettered by government — equally to the conscientious and the flighty, the modest and the mighty, the noble and the most vile.
What makes them even more dangerous is that it allow men like Leonard Pitts to write such tripe.

As Islamic extremists continue a campaign of anti-American violence over “Innocence of Muslims,” a risibly wretched piece of Islamophobic propaganda, it is apparently an article of faith for many in that world that the film represents a U.S. government attack upon Islam. CNN’s Fareed Zakaria says they have “a lack of ... understanding of freedom of speech and opinion.”
That’s putting it mildly. And that ignorance has become a potentially deadly flashpoint in recent years. It used to be that only a few high-profile, theoretically responsible, individuals had access to the world stage and the ability to affect world events. But with the advent of YouTube, Google, Facebook and Twitter, it is now conceivable some shlub in Fort Lauderdale could start a riot in Mogadishu. So the most dangerous words ever written have become more dangerous still. [full article here]
Actually, Leonard, the words are not dangerous.  It is the mixture of Islamist ideas and Muslim ignorance of basic human civilized behavior that is dangerous.  It is not having enough intelligence and understanding and confidence in your own philosophy that you have to respond with violence because you are unable to refute simple words spoken or written in bad taste.

The temper tantrums of 3-year olds with guns... justified by the scribblings of the half-educated.

A Sign Of Obamatime: Smith & Wesson Stock Soars

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and RIGHTS.

About 50% of the voters in the U.S. are voting with their wallets... or so it seems.  You know, all of those redneck Tea Party types that are not welcome by the Party Of Inclusion*.   Those Neanderthals who simply won't give up their 2nd Amendment rights despite the best logic of sociologists.  They are the ones responsible for this example of corporate greed.  President Obama will have to rectify this situation immediately.

From Yahoo:

Smith & Wesson soars as earnings beat Wall St.

Smith & Wesson shares explode on record fiscal first-quarter profit and revenue

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Sales are so strong that Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. is aiming for bigger profits. Its shares jumped more than 19 percent in after-hours trading as the gun maker posted record quarterly earnings and said it expected more to come.
Smith & Wesson expects earnings during the fiscal year ending next April in the range of 85 to 90 cents per share with revenue of $530 million to $540 million, or nearly one-third higher than the previous year. That would demolish analysts' forecasts of 57 cents per share including special items, and sales of $498.2 million, according to FactSet.

The company said Thursday that it earned a record profit in its fiscal first quarter, which ended July 31. Net income was $18.9 million, or 28 cents per share, compared with $2.3 million, or 4 cents per share, a year earlier. Analysts expected 18 cents per share on sales of $128.7 million.
Sales jumped 48 percent to a record $136 million, even as the company cut marketing costs. Smith & Wesson credited orders for the newest lightweight pistol in its M&P line, called the Shield, which it advertises as "slim, concealable power" in 9mm & .40-caliber versions, along with other popular guns.  [image] [full article]

Stealth Revocation Of The Second Amendment

SEARCH BLOG: UNITED NATIONS

From Heritage.org:

U.S. Should Quit U.N.’s “Programme of Action”

Today marks the second week of the 2012 Review Conference for the U.N.’s “Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects,” commonly known as the PoA.
Unlike the U.N.’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which collapsed for the time being in July, the PoA is not an effort to negotiate a legally binding treaty. But also unlike the ATT, it clearly and explicitly promotes gun control by developing supposedly binding norms.
The PoA has come nowhere close to achieving the ambitions of its backers. On this, there is unanimous agreement. In 2008, the U.N. Secretary General stated that the PoA’s results were not “substantive.” Recently, New Zealand’s permanent representative to the U.N., Jim McLay, noted that “it is almost impossible to acquire an accurate picture of Programme of Action implementation and effectiveness” and that “the results of those more limited assessments that have been undertaken have not been encouraging.” Sarah Parker of the Small Arms Survey refers to the PoA’s “lack of specificity.” The International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), the leading small-arms-control NGO, regrets that the PoA has been “irregularly and inconsistently applied.”
The normal approach is to try to walk before you run. At the U.N., though, the response to the PoA’s inability to walk is to recommend running. IANSA wants the PoA to expand to cover ammunition. Parker wants a PoA that would provide a broader framework for the ATT. And McLay believes it should consider further “normative development”—i.e., in future years it should discuss “the issues of civilian possession.” Indeed, on Tuesday at the review conference, IANSA acknowledged that the PoA has served as the basis for “gun control” in many nations and encouraged others to follow along.
As Thomas Mason, executive for the Americas on the World Forum on the Future of Sport Shooting Activities, put it in his statement to the Review Conference, “of all the small arms in the world 60% are legally owned by civilians. The UN and this process have never reconciled themselves to this fact.”
The Obama administration can perfume this pig any way it wants, but it boils down to allowing an extra-national organization to revoke a Constitutional right.

Social Justice Department Of Justice Style

SEARCH BLOG: GOVERNMENT

"We're from the Federal Government and here to help you."

The very same Department of Justice that sues states for requiring photo identification to prevent fraud in the form of dead people and illegal aliens voting is also suing the State of Ohio for allowing soldiers to vote early... claiming that is "discrimination."  No, Ohio did not say only "white" soldiers could vote.  They just won't let the dead people and illegal aliens vote early and often, too.

From The Wall Street Journal:

The campaign says the election-law changes made by Ohio’s Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, unfairly ends in-person early voting for most people on the Friday evening before Election Day — a Tuesday — but allows military and overseas voters to cast ballots in person until Monday, AP reported  [full article]
What was neglected by the DOJ was that due to military duty overseas, a majority of those soldiers votes were invalidated because of restrictive timing in the 2008 election.  Where was the outcry for those risking their lives for their country?  Perhaps they were not "illegal" enough for Eric Holder.

Supreme Court To Deliberate On Individual Health Care Mandate

SEARCH BLOG: HEALTH CARE

Tomorrow, the Supreme Court begins to hear arguments regarding the constitutional legality of the so-called "Individual Mandate" in the so-called "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act."  This will be one of the most important cases ever to be heard by the Supreme Court, not because it allows or disallows the health care part of the legislation - which is fiscally onerous in itself, but because it potentially re-affirms the limits on the Federal government or, conversely, determines there are no limits on the Federal government with regard to states and individuals.  It is the single most important decision that will either separate us from a Chinese Communist form of government or allow the Constitution of this country to be ignored with regard to states' and individuals' rights.

That is what is at stake, not a few thousand dollars a year for individuals.  While cost is an important issue, it is not the issue.

This article in Reason Magazine spells out the reasons why the Supreme Court should strike down the "requirement to maintain minimum essential coverage."  You owe it to yourself to read this.

Whitney Houston Lost Her War On Drugs

SEARCH BLOG:

Five weeks ago the question was posed:

Did Whitney Houston Lose Her War With Drugs?
The answer is:
Cocaine, heart disease contributed to Whitney Houston's drowning, coroner says
[image from Tekstovi-Pesama] So, just one question for those who want to de-criminalize hard drugs: what are you willing to give up for the freedom to use hard drugs?  Obviously, the answer for Whitney Houston was "success, adoration, wealth, recognition, achievement, and fame."

Was Whitney Houston unique among those who gave up success, adoration, wealth, recognition, achievement, and fame?  Not exactly....  Click here for a list of notable people who have died from drug-related causes.

But what about the not-so-notable?  Do we just say, "Go ahead and ruin your lives.  You don't really matter, anyway?"  Well, that won't happen.  If it's not a crime, it's protected... you're protected.

We'll just create a new cabinet level position heading up the Department of Drug Abuse to provide community services and rehabilitation at the cost of hundreds of billions of dollars each year.  But we'll empty a lot of prison cells as an offset.  No crime; no punishment.  No crime; no consequences.

We'll tell children that you really shouldn't use hard drugs. That should handle things.

But if you do you don't have to worry because the government will fix things for you.  And if you never learned a skill or fried your brain, don't worry because the government will take care of you.  In the "new freedom" era, you don't have to worry about punishment or consequences because you have the right to be happy in your own way.  You have the right to have other people pay for your right to be happy.

It's not a crime to be happy, is it?

Eric Holder Would Like To Brainwash You

That's Eric Holder of "Fast and Furious" denial... the top attorney in the U.S. government who has no idea what his subordinates are doing.  That's Eric Holder who doesn't see anything wrong with the "new" Black Panthers intimidating voters.  That's Eric Holder who lets President Obama know when it's okay to ignore immigration laws... all of the time.

Obama The Great Satin Apologizes While Troops Face Trial

SEARCH BLOG:  OBAMA

The supreme ruler of The Great Satan, President Barack Obama - The Great Satin, apologized about some 7th century superstition being burned while NATO, The Great Nuttin, considers putting soldiers on trial for burning that nonsense [HT/ Gateway Pundit].

Hey, freedom of speech... the right to condemn nonsense to a fiery death!  If they are guaranteeing our freedom and rights, then their freedom and rights must be guaranteed as well.  That includes the right to be protected from the religious beliefs of others.

If they are not there to protect our freedom and rights, then The Great Satin should be impeached for sending them there.  The Great Satin turned a relatively small force in Afghanistan into a huge standing army.  Why?  For nation building?

Perhaps if they simply put the superstitious writings in a jar of pig piss and called it art, The Great Satin would rush to defend their rights to free speech.  Or if the soldiers were gay... then Obama might defend their rights.  But ordinary soldiers?  Forgetaboutit.  The Great Satin must support only important things.

Tell me again why we are in Afghanistan doing what we are doing.

“The Divine Afflatus,” A Mencken Chrestomathy, chapter 25, p. 443 (1949)
... and one could add "not all human problems really are."
It was beautiful and simple, as truly great swindles are.
- O. Henry
... The Government is on course for an embarrassing showdown with the European Union, business groups and environmental charities after refusing to guarantee that billions of pounds of revenue it stands to earn from carbon-permit trading will be spent on combating climate change.

Go back to 1999-2000 and see what the Fed did. They are following the same pattern for 2005-06. If it ain't broke, the Fed will fix it... and good!
August 29, 2006 The Federal Reserve always acts on old information... and is the only cause of U.S. recessions.
December 5, 2006 Last spring I wrote about what I saw to be a sharp downturn in the economy in the "rustbelt" states, particularly Michigan.

The Federal Reserve sees no need to cut interest rates in the light of adverse recent economic data, Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.
The Fed chairman said ”to date, the incoming data have supported the view that the current stance of policy is likely to foster sustainable economic growth and a gradual ebbing in core inflation”.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.
August 11, 2007 I suspect that within 6 months the Federal Reserve will be forced to lower interest rates before housing becomes a black hole.
September 11, 2007 It only means that the overall process has flaws guaranteeing it will be slow in responding to changes in the economy... and tend to over-react as a result.
September 18, 2007 I think a 4% rate is really what is needed to turn the economy back on the right course. The rate may not get there, but more cuts will be needed with employment rates down and foreclosure rates up.
October 25, 2007 How long will it be before I will be able to write: "The Federal Reserve lowered its lending rate to 4% in response to the collapse of the U.S. housing market and massive numbers of foreclosures that threaten the banking and mortgage sectors."
November 28, 2007 FED VICE CHAIRMAN DONALD KOHN
"Should the elevated turbulence persist, it would increase the possibility of further tightening in financial conditions for households and businesses," he said.

"Uncertainties about the economic outlook are unusually high right now," he said. "These uncertainties require flexible and pragmatic policymaking -- nimble is the adjective I used a few weeks ago."

December 11, 2007 Somehow the Fed misses the obvious.

December 13, 2007 [from The Christian Science Monitor]
"The odds of a recession are now above 50 percent," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "We are right on the edge of a recession in part because of the Fed's reluctance to reduce interest rates more aggressively." [see my comments of September 11]
January 7, 2008 The real problem now is that consumers can't rescue the economy and manufacturing, which is already weakening, will continue to weaken. We've gutted the forces that could avoid a downturn. The question is not whether there will be a recession, but can it be dampened sufficiently so that it is very short.
January 11, 2008 This is death by a thousand cuts.
January 13, 2008 [N.Y. Times]
“The question is not whether we will have a recession, but how deep and prolonged it will be,” said David Rosenberg, the chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch. “Even if the Fed’s moves are going to work, it will not show up until the later part of 2008 or 2009.
January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
