Sanity: If Muslims Want Peace... Stop Attacking

SEARCH BLOG: ISLAM and ISRAEL.

Here is a solution for Middle East peace.  Convince the Muslims to stop attacking Israel. [image] Then Israel will stop attacking Muslims in retaliation.

What's wrong with that?

Muslims will not stop attacking Israel.  Why?  They don't want peace with Israel; they want Israel destroyed.  Why?  Because Israel represents the antithesis of Islam.  What do you mean?  Islam is the forcible subjugation of rational thinking.

Insanity: expecting a different outcome while repeating the same action.  Insanity: expecting Muslims to seek peace as understood by the rest of the world.  Insanity: supporting the efforts of the Muslims.

2013: Housing: Boom Or Bust?

SEARCH BLOG: ECONOMY.

Everyday it seems there are new stories about how the U.S. housing situation is getting better.  But there are a few voices in the wilderness who are calling out, "Watch out below!"

The Wall Street Journal supports that general contention with this specific warning about the Federal Housing Authority:
The Latest Taxpayer Housing Bust.
With the election over, we learn that the FHA is insolvent.
Vindication is overrated, especially in a losing cause, so it brings no satisfaction to have predicted that the Federal Housing Administration would sooner or later threaten taxpayers. That day has arrived. Safely past the election, the feds announced Friday that the FHA's liabilities exceed its assets by at least $16.3 billion—and the gap could reach $93.7 billion in the worst case. [more]
And what is the Obama administration doing about this?

Yup, fiscal responsibility be damned.  We're going to have social justice.

Maybe it's time for the Social Justicer In Chief to go back to doing what he does best.

Obama In Asia: Strategic Or Strange?

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA.

Does it strike anyone that President Obama's trip to southeast Asia is stretching for a reason?  Here in the U.S., the muddle over paying for government spending continues to cause consternation in Congress and Wall Street.  In Europe, France and Germany's financial ratings just got downgraded and the British government appears to be lurching spasmodically between issues of taxes and energy and what it wants to be when it grows up.  Of course, there is another one of those irritating scuffles going on in Gaza and Israel that Obama may hear about if he gets an intelligence briefing.

But President Obama feels it is imperative to focus his attention on Myanmar [nee Burma] which most Americans associate with odd temples and ivory elephants and weird dances.  Still, the President must feel there is an overriding strategic issues that trumps addressing issues in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.
The trip to Myanmar highlighted what the White House has touted as a major foreign policy achievement [???] -- its success in pushing the country's generals to enact changes that have unfolded with surprising speed over the past year. [source] [image].
Yeah, that's a bit of a stretch.  But it possibly has more value than the President spending the last months of his first term doing this...

or maybe not.

Of course, Hawaii is on the way back to Washington, D.C., so the trip might be salvaged... if the President can get that old putter to cooperate.

The New York Times Forgot How Latest Israel-Hamas Conflict Began

SEARCH BLOG: ISRAEL.

From The New York Times:

Conflict Summary.
On Nov. 14, 2012, Israel launched an air campaign against targets associated with Hamas, the hardline Palestinian party that has ruled Gaza since 2007. It was the first major conflict between the two since Israel’s Operation Cast Lead killed about 1,400 Gazans in three weeks of air and ground assaults in response to repeated rocket fire starting in December 2008.
Since then, the two sides had observed an informal and uneasy cease-fire. In recent months, the number of rockets fired into southern Israel by militant groups in Gaza had risen. Hamas had mostly held its fire while it struggled to rein in those groups.
But it has responded forcefully to the new assault, sending more than 300 rockets into Israel over 24 hours, with several penetrating the heart of Israel’s population center around Tel Aviv.
I won't say that the reporting is intentionally biased, but it strains credulity to believe that The New York Times simply forgot that Hamas had begun the conflict with four days of missile attacks into Israel.  This Orwellian black is white reporting by The New York Times is simply astounding... and unworthy.

Health Insurance Costs: Where's The War On Women?

SEARCH BLOG: HEALTH CARE.

The New York Times was a standard bearer for the Obama campaign declaring that Republicans were waging a "war on women."

Striking new evidence has emerged of a widespread gap in the cost of health insurance, as women pay much more than men of the same age for individual insurance policies providing identical coverage, according to new data from insurance companies and online brokers. [more.]
Imaging how surprising this must be to senior men who are shopping for health insurance... or life insurance.  Here is a schedule of premiums for men and women who wish to buy Medigap insurance.

How dare those insurance companies base premiums on actuarial data when it comes to men?  After all, the President of the United States has declared that using real cost data for setting insurance premiums is unjust... when it comes to women.

So what does the president have against men?

U.S. Voters: Were 51% Fooled All Of The Time?

SEARCH BLOG: OBAMA and GOVERNMENT.

You can't fool all of the people all of the time - Abraham Lincoln.  But President Obama has learn how to fool enough of the people all of the time... with the help of some very accommodating media types... to get re-elected and continue his course toward a shipwrecked America... or "cliff-wrecked" America if you choose. [image.]

Those who were not fooled can hardly have the satisfaction of saying "I told you so" because there is no satisfaction where we are headed.  The stock market has fallen over 7% in one month.  For you union types, that means your pension funds have taken a nasty hit... which you are cheering on because in your minds that hurts "Wall Street."  The GOP is making nice with the president.  For you conservatives, that means 4 more years of the 4 years just finished.  The EPA and courts are playing havoc with the energy market which means that 100% of the voters will face significantly higher energy costs over the next four years.

How could those 51%-ers have voted for the captain of the shipwreck?  Victor Hansen at the National Review has his own thesis on that score.
Coincidentally, right after the election we heard that Iran had attacked a U.S. drone in international waters. [so much for negotiating with our best new friends in the Middle East]
Coincidentally, we just learned that new food-stamp numbers were “delayed” and that millions more became new recipients in the months before the election. [so much for those three "summers of recovery".]
Coincidentally, we now gather that the federal relief effort following Hurricane Sandy was not so smooth, even as New Jersey governor Chris Christie and Barack Obama high-fived it. Instead, in Katrina-like fashion, tens of thousands are still without power or shelter two weeks after the storm.  [so much for the new and improved version of federal government.]
Coincidentally, we now learn that Obama’s plan of letting tax rates increase for the “fat cat” 2 percent who make over $250,000 a year would not even add enough new revenue to cover 10 percent of the annual deficit. How he would get the other 90 percent in cuts, we are never told. [so much for "fair sharing".]
Coincidentally, we now learn that the vaunted DREAM Act would at most cover only about 10 percent to 20 percent of illegal immigrants. As part of the bargain, does Obama have a post-election Un-DREAM Act to deport the other 80 percent who do not qualify since either they just recently arrived in America, are not working, are not in school or the military, are on public assistance, or have a criminal record?  [so much for addressing the "social justice" issue of not enforcing our sovereign borders.]
Coincidentally, now that the election is over, the scandal over the killings of Americans in Libya seems warranted because of the abject failure to heed pleas for more security before the attack and assistance during it. And the scandal is about more than just the cover-up of fabricating an absurd myth of protesters mad over a two-month-old video — just happening to show up on the anniversary of 9/11 with machine guns and rockets. [so much for truth.]
"Coincidentally" is the conglomeration of  a variety of left-leaning media spinners that found it convenient to distort or delay news that might have been considered less-than-desirable despite their actions being less-than-truthful or less-than-ethical.

Israel Not Responding Appropriately To Missile Attacks From Islamists

SEARCH BLOG: ISRAEL and ISLAM.

News of more missile attacks from Gaza into Israel followed by more Israeli retaliation followed by the Egyptians claiming that Israel is the "aggressor" only points out that the Israeli response to attacks is not well thought out.

Because the missiles have the accuracy of a Nerf ball thrown out of moving car, the Israelis should take the opportunity to deliver some Karma to the Islamists.

Each time a missile hits a town in Israel where there is an Arab population, an Arab business or school or  mosque should bit hit by one of those missiles.  It would be best if those locations were empty, of course, but since they originated from "Gaza" the Israelis could hardly be blamed.  The latest target is Jerusalem where this structure stands.

Of course, those "unfortunate" missile hits would continue to hit Arab locations until the Arabs stopped firing missiles at Israel.  The punishment should always fit the crime.

List of mosques in Israel from Wikipedia.  Odd that those Israeli aggressors allow so many mosques within their country, isn't it.

The Federal Government Screws You At The Gas Pump And At The Dinner Table

SEARCH BLOG: GOVERNMENT.

Sometimes the Idiocracy in Washington becomes so blatant that the only possible reaction is "that's just stupid."  Let's connect the dots.

  • Washington mandates a certain percentage of ethanol from plants be blended into gasoline.
  • There is a shortage of corn for feed stock for animals which are raised for human food.
  • There is a shortage of corn for human food products.
  • There is an abundance of natural gas.
  • There is a company that can convert natural gas into ethanol.
  • Washington will not allow that company to supply ethanol for gasoline because it is not plant based.
  • You continue to pay more than necessary for both gasoline and food because some bureaucrats in Washington know more about what is good for this economy than the marketplace.

Does that need further clarification?

The Federal Housing Authority says:

To recap: loose lending standards led to massive numbers of bad mortgages that were bundled and sold which led to... massive numbers of defaults and foreclosures and lost investments which led to... government bailouts of the banks which led to... demands for more responsible lending requirements which led to... difficulties getting new loans which led to... a continued depression of the housing market which led to... calls for loose lending standards which led to... authorizing loans for those who had borrowed money for homes that they could not afford which led to ... go back to the beginning of this sentence.

Stock Market: Anticipating The Worst?

SEARCH BLOG: ECONOMY.

People vote their greed; the stock market votes its money.  So far, the two seem to be quite separable.  In the month prior to and after President Obama's re-election, the stock market [DJIA] has fallen about 1,000 points or more than 7.5%.

[source.]

I'd venture that this was in anticipation of both Obama's re-election and the fiscal mess he has led us into over the past four years... coming to a head in the metaphorical "fiscal cliff."  How far down will this market fall?  Look for a temporary reprieve while the politicians sidestep the made issue of debt and focus on the "newsworthy" fluff that pretends to be addressing the problem.

No politician wants to be responsible for closing the lid on Obama's stash.  Wouldn't be politically-correct.

Let's hear it for the 51%-ers.

Obama: Israel Justified In Retaliation Against Hamas

SEARCH BLOG: ISRAEL and OBAMA.

UPDATE:

Nearly 250 Gaza rockets batter South; 3 Israelis killed.

______________________________________________

Israel has been becoming increasingly nervous about its belligerent neighbors and the apparent coziness of the Obama administration with the Muslim Brotherhood... the organization precipitating increasingly belligerent actions.  The question is: has Israel decided to take whatever actions it sees as necessary and appropriate to defend itself even if it means creating situations that disrupt the Obama administration's Middle East policies?

There are some who will blame Israel regardless of whether it is being aggressive in its retaliation or not; they will disregard what precipitated the action and characterize Israel as the big, bad military power killing defenseless people.

Bloomberg Businessweek, not necessarily a fan of Israel, couches a recent article about how Israel responded to 115 rockets fired into Israel by Hamas in terms of how it temporarily affected oil prices.   Fortunately, it looks as if oil prices will not stay affected by Israel's actions.  Unfortunately, this will not be the last time Israel is attacked by Muslim forces which surround it.
Oil in New York remains in a downtrend channel on the daily chart, signaling price advances may not be sustainable, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Futures have traded between the middle and lower Bollinger Bands for almost two months. These indicators, representing technical resistance and support levels respectively, are around $88 and $82.50 a barrel today.
The Israeli strikes followed the firing of more than 115 rockets from Gaza into Israel this week, adding to a total of about 14,000 missiles fired from the territory in the past 11 years, according to the Israeli Defense Ministry. Since the conclusion of Israel’s 2008 ground attack on Gaza, the government has said it holds Hamas responsible for the rocket attacks because it runs the coastal territory.
The New York Times characterized the Israeli retaliation this way:
Ferocious Israeli Assault on Gaza Kills a Leader of Hamas.
Israel hit at least 20 targets in aerial attacks that killed the military commander of Hamas, damaged Israel's fragile relations with Egypt and escalated the risks of a new war in the Middle East.
Nevertheless, to his credit, President Obama did side with Israel with regard to this attack and retaliation:
President Barack Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi Wednesday night about rocket attacks being launched from Gaza into Israel and escalating violence in the Gaza Strip.
The White House said Obama reiterated U.S. support for Israel’s right to self-defense from rocket attacks being launched against its civilians and urged Israel to “make every effort to avoid civilian casualties” in its response.
Israel carried out a blistering offensive of more than 50 airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, assassinating Hamas’ military commander in the most intense attack on the territory in nearly four years.
Israel said the airstrikes, launched in response to days of rocket fire out of Hamas-ruled Gaza, were the beginning of a broader operation against Islamic militants. Israeli defense officials said a ground operation was a strong possibility in the coming days though they stressed no decisions had been made.
Obama and Netanyahu agreed that Hamas needs to stop its attacks on Israel to allow tensions to ease, the White House said. The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch in the coming days. Earlier Wednesday Netanyahu also spoke to Vice President Joe Biden on the events in Gaza.
Obama spoke separately to Morsi, given Egypt’s central role in preserving regional security, the White House said. The two men agreed on the need to de-escalate the conflict as quickly as possible. [source.]

The targeted revenue is twice the amount Obama discussed with Republican leaders during debt talks during the summer of 2011.

February 3, 2006
Go back to 1999-2000 and see what the Fed did. They are following the same pattern for 2005-06. If it ain't broke, the Fed will fix it... and good!
August 29, 2006 The Federal Reserve always acts on old information... and is the only cause of U.S. recessions.
December 5, 2006 Last spring I wrote about what I saw to be a sharp downturn in the economy in the "rustbelt" states, particularly Michigan.
March 28, 2007
The Federal Reserve sees no need to cut interest rates in the light of adverse recent economic data, Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.
The Fed chairman said ”to date, the incoming data have supported the view that the current stance of policy is likely to foster sustainable economic growth and a gradual ebbing in core inflation”.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.
August 11, 2007 I suspect that within 6 months the Federal Reserve will be forced to lower interest rates before housing becomes a black hole.
September 11, 2007 It only means that the overall process has flaws guaranteeing it will be slow in responding to changes in the economy... and tend to over-react as a result.
September 18, 2007 I think a 4% rate is really what is needed to turn the economy back on the right course. The rate may not get there, but more cuts will be needed with employment rates down and foreclosure rates up.
October 25, 2007 How long will it be before I will be able to write: "The Federal Reserve lowered its lending rate to 4% in response to the collapse of the U.S. housing market and massive numbers of foreclosures that threaten the banking and mortgage sectors."
November 28, 2007 FED VICE CHAIRMAN DONALD KOHN
"Should the elevated turbulence persist, it would increase the possibility of further tightening in financial conditions for households and businesses," he said.

"Uncertainties about the economic outlook are unusually high right now," he said. "These uncertainties require flexible and pragmatic policymaking -- nimble is the adjective I used a few weeks ago."

December 11, 2007 Somehow the Fed misses the obvious.

December 13, 2007 [from The Christian Science Monitor]
"The odds of a recession are now above 50 percent," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "We are right on the edge of a recession in part because of the Fed's reluctance to reduce interest rates more aggressively." [see my comments of September 11]
January 7, 2008 The real problem now is that consumers can't rescue the economy and manufacturing, which is already weakening, will continue to weaken. We've gutted the forces that could avoid a downturn. The question is not whether there will be a recession, but can it be dampened sufficiently so that it is very short.
January 11, 2008 This is death by a thousand cuts.
January 13, 2008 [N.Y. Times]
“The question is not whether we will have a recession, but how deep and prolonged it will be,” said David Rosenberg, the chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch. “Even if the Fed’s moves are going to work, it will not show up until the later part of 2008 or 2009.
January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
