Detroit Lions - Oops, Oops, Oops, Oops, Oops
SEARCH BLOG: DETROIT LIONS
It is way too early to say "I told you so." And it is unfair to judge this early... especially with a team like the Detroit Lions. So I won't say it. But 2 for 2 dozen or so is an incredible exercise in futility and bad judgment by team management.
The statistics tell the story:
Detroit | Comp | Att | Yds | Pct | Y/A | Sack | YdsL | TD | Int | Rating |
M. Stafford | 22 | 42 | 203 | 52.4 | 4.8 | 2 | 17 | 2 | 5 | 42.2 |
5 interceptions in yesterday's game... oops, oops, oops, oops, oops... 12 on the year so far, but he has amassed a total of 5 touchdowns. True, it is hard to win games that way, but you have to try to find the bright side. And they were playing a tough Seattle team that had come in with a 2 - 5 record... so there was that for an excuse.
I refer you to this. Unfortunately, Tebow wasn't available. He decided to stay at Florida when he learned that Detroit might be interested.
Well, give Stafford 8 or 9 years. The Lions are going to have to because it is obvious after a decade of blown draft picks on quarterbacks and wide receivers they might as well go after the biggest, faster, meanest defensive linemen they can find and forget the offense because... well because the defense in going to be on the field most of the time anyway.
But if they want to go out on the street and pick up a good quarterback, they might consider contacting the Saskatchewan Roughriders. That team picked up a quarterback who produced a whole lot more in college than Stafford... twice as many passing yards, a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio versus 1.5:1. Of course, you could argue that Graham Harrell played against weeny teams like Texas and Oklahoma while Stafford played against powerhouses like Florida and Alabama.
The scouts simply overlooked the intangibles... Harrell never panics... and he makes good decisions quickly. That's probably why the Lions never considered him. Or it could be that the Lions stick to a scouting process that has guided them through the past few decades. But, geez, they could have gotten Harrell in the 6th round!
... not in 2009, the Lions have won one!
