CO2 - Be Afraid

Having recovered from the ice ages of the 1970s, fringe groups [must read this] are now trying to frighten the world with tales of runaway CO2 heating of earth's atmosphere... perhaps to something like this...?

Venus is blanketed with a thick layer of non-anthropogenic [naturally occurring] carbon dioxide. Of course, when you compare Earth to Venus, there are some differences despite the similarities in size.

  • Venus is about 67 million miles from the sun; Earth is about 93 million miles. There is something about being closer to the sun that makes a planet warmer.
  • Venus' atmosphere is 96% CO2; Earth's atmosphere is ≈ 0% CO2

Earth's greenhouse gas is primarily water... H2O; Venus has virtually no H2O

Ooops... Earth's CO2 levels were significantly higher in it's geological past with periods of temperatures colder than present averages:
Ooops... of course, there is that pesky issue that increases in Earth's CO2 levels have followed increases in temperatures... not preceded them.


Given these basic flaws in the IPCC thinking regarding the drivers of climate change and Earth's CO2 levels, one has to presume that a CO2 molecule looks like this to them...


Conveniently disregarding science and to save us all from our consuming ways, the Obama Administration is... shall we say... hot to pass legislation to "cap" CO2.
Of course, human release of CO2 into the atmosphere is a minuscule portion of a trace gas.
But let's go ahead and ruin our economy despite that inconvenient fact. And then when the next cyclical cooling hits full force, those same fringe elements that are using bad science to predict all manner of heating disasters can predict a new ice age again... and the need for different governmental controls rather than simply accepting climate variability as, gee, something we can adapt to by not getting government in the way.

July 21, 2007 My guess is that if there is an interest rate change, a cut is more likely than an increase. The key variables to be watching at this point are real estate prices and the inventory of unsold homes.

January 17, 2008 A few days ago, Anna Schwartz, nonagenarian economist, implicated the Federal Reserve as the cause of the present lending crisis [from the Telegraph - UK]:
The high priestess of US monetarism - a revered figure at the Fed - says the central bank is itself the chief cause of the credit bubble, and now seems stunned as the consequences of its own actions engulf the financial system. "The new group at the Fed is not equal to the problem that faces it," she says, daring to utter a thought that fellow critics mostly utter sotto voce.
January 22, 2008 The cut has become infected and a limb is in danger. Ben Bernanke is panicking and the Fed has its emergency triage team cutting rates... this time by 3/4%. ...

What should the Federal Reserve do now? Step back... and don't be so anxious to raise rates at the first sign of economic improvement.
Individuals and businesses need stability in their financial cost structures so that they can plan effectively and keep their ships afloat. Wildly fluctuating rates... regardless of what the absolute levels are... create problems. Either too much spending or too much fear. It's just not that difficult to comprehend. Why has it been so difficult for the Fed?
