Rules of Complexity or Why We Don't Have A Clue
Get to the point!
Ah, we are impatient. The world... the universe... is more complex than most of us wish to admit. We want slogans or statements of absolutes to make us feel that we "understand" who we are and how we relate to everything around us. Well, these "shortcuts" are fine for many of life's mundane events. But the problem begins when we begin to extrapolate our shortcuts for understanding to "universal truths."
So, let's begin with a couple of shortcuts to help us understand the complexity of this world:
- Nothing is ever as simple as it first seems
- Triple your original estimate.
Oh, I'm not just talking about religion or politics. It goes for all areas of human endeavor... including science. How many times has a scientific "fact" been the reason that new evidence for a new "fact" is dismissed as "absurd"?
Okay, we need shortcuts to function as individuals or groups. They enable us to skip ground that was covered earlier. But those shortcuts also lock us into thoughts, philosophies, and "truths" that are questionable at best and destructive at worst. They become our "beliefs". They define us and the world around us. Hence, we call ourselves "Catholics" or "Conservatives" or "Conservationists" or whatever shortcut seems most appropriate. And then we don't think much about it until we are challenged, at which point we pull out the platitudes and call them our "arguments". It's amazing how two people with conflicting views each can see themself as rational and logical while seeing their opposition as irrational and illogical.
So much for the origins of "spin". Now some groups make a living out of "spinning". http://www.prwatch.org/spin.php

Of course, their "truths" are based on their shortcuts to the world.
As we go along, you will no doubt see some of the "shortcuts" that I use. Feel free to challenge them. Just try to be aware of the shortcuts you are using.
